There was a crash that resounded through the mountain as several ton of metal struck the ground at better than seventy kilometers a second. It sounded as though all the remaining robots had jumped off the edge of the shaft at once in a last, suicidal attempt to stop the humans. The clattering of metal was deafening—but the humans survived.
Dev landed on the ground on her left side and screamed with pain as her already injured leg suffered further abuse. She lay there for several minutes, eyes closed, oblivious to everything but the agony that was shooting through her foot.
