Matthias I wasn’t going to take any chances staying in Texas with Rose.  I had my jet waiting for us at a private airfield just north of El Paso.  I had Rose in my arms, but it was not the Rose I had held in NYC.  This Rose was silent, and she had that flat, closed expression again that I didn’t like.  Now and then she chewed her lip like she wanted to say something, but then she would shake her head and her eyes would grew distant.  I helped her onto the plane and buckled her in, then I went to give some terse instructions to the pilot.  When I came back, Rose had curled herself up in the spacious leather seat and seemed to be sleeping.  I sat down next to her, but even the small distance between us made me feel uncomfortable and insecure.
