Chapter 10 What Must Come, Has Come

681 Words
Fiona managed to get out of the hospital without a hitch. What she didn't expect was that two men in black had already been hiding in the crowd, waiting for her. The moment she showed up, they flanked her on both sides and forced her into a car. "Miss Harper, we won't hurt you. Just come with us, have the baby taken care of, and then you're free to go." Fiona sneered. She knew it-Debbie would never let her walk away with Carlos' child that easily! Adjusting her black-rimmed glasses, she got into the car, cold and compliant. But when they stopped at a red light at the intersection, she discreetly tossed a ball of paper out the window. And sure enough, when the car pulled into a dim alleyway, it was immediately surrounded by police. Fiona was gone. Right before boarding, she sent a message to Carlos's phone: "I'm leaving. Don't bother looking for me. And don't you dare use Bruce against me. If you so much as touch him, Carlos, I'll make sure your child vanishes off the face of the earth." Then she shut off the phone, yanked out the SIM card, and tossed it down the sewer. Cool as ever, Fiona walked away. But Carlos, blindsided and caught off guard, was nearly driven mad. What did she say? She said she left? She just up and left? How could she? She owed too much. She couldn't just disappear like that! And she took their baby with her! Carlos rushed to the hospital immediately, only to find there was still someone lying in the bed. At first glance, the face and demeanor were freakishly similar to Fiona's. He felt a sliver of relief-maybe she was just playing around. He tiptoed closer. The nearer he got, the clearer he saw. These twin sisters really did look almost identical. But the woman on the bed wasn't her. His lips pressed into a tight line, trembling slightly. Fury clouded his mind as he pulled out his phone and barked into it: "Find out what flight Fiona took. I don't care if you have to turn Skyvale upside down or chase her to the clouds-stop her!" With the Morton family's reach in Skyvale, tracking a woman down was no big deal. Which was exactly why, the moment Fiona touched down, she realized-stupidly, painfully-that she wasn't going anywhere. Just like a trapped animal, she was stuck there, cornered at the airport. She saw Ryan standing outside the fence with a reception sign-but no matter what, she couldn't get to him. Six men in uniform blocked her path with stone-cold faces. "Mr. Morton invites Miss Harper to wait in the lounge." Who else could "Mr. Morton" be but Carlos? Fiona bit down on her lip, pissed at herself for sending that message too early. She should've waited until she was in the clear! She was holed up in the airport hotel for over ten hours, tried every trick in the book, but these six men weren't letting her go anywhere. Since she was pregnant, and obviously couldn't have someone tailing her everywhere-including meals, naps, and bathroom breaks-they even hired a female airport staffer to follow her everywhere. The hate inside her boiled over. That devil Carlos, even across continents, could still control everything around her like a puppet master. Then, the narrow door creaked open. Carlos stepped in wearing a long black coat, cold air clinging to him like he'd just risen from an ice cave. Fiona's eyes fluttered up, dazed, staring at this man who suddenly filled the room with his presence, blocking out the weak light spilling in from the hallway. She gave a thin, bitter smile. So he came anyway. At first glance, Carlos spotted the woman huddled in a corner of the bed, her knees pulled tightly to her chest, curled up like a hedgehog in a defensive posture. The storm building inside him broke loose. In two long strides, he was on her, pinning her to the bed. "Fiona! Where the hell were you planning to take my kid?!"
