ADAM "Your parents must be very proud of you." The aging patient says in between wheezes. "You are such a handsome young doctor." "Yeah they are." I reply absently as I write her prescription. "Am I going to get well?" I force a smile despite the pit in my stomach. A sense of foreboding is engulfing me and I don't like it. It's that sixth sense that warns you when everything is about to go wrong. "You'll be fine. You are very strong so you're going to be okay." I pat her wrinkled cheek. "Just go to sleep. I'll see you later." I wait until she's lying on the hospital bed before I walk out. She has been here for months, and I know that she only has a few weeks to live.
