Chapter 13 It's Not What You Think-But You'll Never Believe Me

640 Words
Outside the door, a pair of sneaky eyes were watching everything unfold, and the person was snapping a video on their phone. Out of nowhere, the phone recording it started ringing with a bright, jaunty ringtone. Startled, Harper's hands jerked as she rushed to hang up. "What was that sound?" William stepped over to the doorway, glancing around. "Probably just someone passing by!" "Mr. Grant, there's no point trying to convince me. I'm not changing my mind." "Scarlett, don't be so stubborn!" "If there's even the slightest chance to save your life, why give up so easily?" The two were still deep in debate, completely unaware of what was happening just outside the door. Soon after Harper left the villa, Ethan called her, his voice laced with suspicion and a sharp edge. "Did you get the documents? Why'd you hang up on me? Don't you realize we're about to start a meeting over here?" "I... I'm sorry. I haven't gotten them yet. I... I wasn't sure if I should go in just now..." Harper sounded both awkward and hesitant. "What do you mean?" "You asked me to grab the files from the study, but when I got to the house, Marry wasn't there. Instead, I saw Mrs. Johnson in the living room... with a strange guy. They were all over each other." "I even heard that guy telling her to leave you and go with him. I don't really know what was going on, and I had no clue who the man was, so I didn't dare go in." "She was alone with a man? Touching each other?" Ethan's voice turned ice-cold, sending chills even through the line. "Oh, right- I also recorded it. Want to check it out? Maybe he's someone you know. He looked pretty decent, well-dressed and all." Sensing Ethan's fury reaching a boiling point, Harper quickly sent the video she had just taken. Staring at the video, Ethan saw William excitedly holding Scarlett's hand. Scarlett looked shy but happy-like a couple long separated had finally reunited. The scene practically burned his eyes. With a loud "thud," he slammed his phone down and immediately stormed out. "Mr. Johnson, what's going on? Where are you going? The shareholders are still waiting!" "The meeting's off. Postpone it to tomorrow!" Ethan drove like a madman, stepping hard on the gas and blowing through red lights one after another. The only thought in his mind: find that cheating pair and make them pay. But by the time he got home, William was already gone. Scarlett was still on the couch, holding a man's coat close, burying her face in it like she was deeply lost in thought-maybe even missing someone. The sight slammed into Ethan like a punch to the gut, wiping away the last bit of sanity he had left. Eyes blazing, he strode over and yanked the coat from her hands, tossing it to the floor and grinding it underfoot. His voice was cold and biting: "He's gone already, and you're still holding onto his jacket like some love-struck fool? Scarlett, since when did you get this sentimental?" Scarlett froze, startled by his sudden appearance. She didn't know why he was back or what he might've seen. But she knew-it wasn't what he thought. Right after William had left, she sat dazed on the couch for a while. Just as she was about to head back to the bedroom, her hand brushed against the coat. Ethan hadn't been home in over two weeks, and there was no way his coat would still be lying on the couch. If it had been, Marry would've taken care of it. So Scarlett picked it up and smelled it. If it didn't have Ethan's scent, then it had to be William's, and she needed to return it-fast. She didn't want any crazy misunderstandings.
