  “I already apologized to Grace last time we met,” Margaret said. “Originally, I meant to find a time to chat with you both… didn’t expect you’d show up first.”   The Howards’ gazes snapped to Grace. Mr. Howard shot her a vicious glare.   Margaret’s attitude made it pretty obvious—she wanted out of the engagement.   All those years of effort, and now it was about to go down the drain. Mr. Howard was furious but couldn’t let it show. He forced himself to keep calm.   “So what, the Hardings are playing us for fools now?”   “That talk we had when we agreed on their engagement, half the city knew about it. Even the media picked it up. And now you want to back out just like that? What about Grace’s reputation?”   “Sure, we’re not as loaded as your family, but we’re still respectable!”
