Chapter 4 Blamed for Blood

716 Words
Evelyn instantly sensed trouble and tried to leave, but Gina was a step ahead. She yanked Evelyn's long hair, pulling her back hard. Evelyn hit the ground with a painful thud, letting out a sharp cry. Gina slapped a hand over her mouth and lifted her leg to kick her stomach. Evelyn wrapped her arms tightly around her belly, enduring several brutal kicks. Pain shot through her body like fire, but she wouldn't let go for anything. Hold on, baby. Mommy's here. I'll keep you safe, no matter what. Gritting her teeth, Evelyn took advantage of a brief opening, dragging herself off the ground. She lunged forward, wrapping her arms around Gina's leg mid-kick. "Gina, you can do whatever you want to me, but if you lay a finger on my baby, I swear, I won't back down!" The two struggled, limbs flailing in a mess of hair and limbs, when the sound of cold, heavy steps broke into the chaos. Gina's expression shifted in a flash. She suddenly whimpered, voice trembling, "I'm sorry, Evelyn. I shouldn't have fallen for him. I was wrong. Please—don't hurt my baby!" Wait, what? Evelyn froze. She heard it clearly—"my baby"—and her eyes went wide, her grip loosening just enough in shock. Before she could react, Gina threw herself sideways—just enough to crash into the sharp edge of a table. "Ah! My stomach! My baby! Evelyn, please... help me... save my baby..." Gina's agonized screams snapped Evelyn out of it. Blood was seeping through Gina's white chiffon dress, spreading like a stain across the floor. Evelyn's face went pale. Gina... was pregnant? Outside the room, Fabian heard the commotion, Gina's cries slicing through the noise. He rushed in, eyes narrowing at the bloody scene. Without hesitation, he shoved Evelyn aside. "Gina!" he shouted, panic lacing his voice.Gina clutched Fabian's arm the moment she saw him, her face pale, tears trailing from the corners of her eyes. "Fabian, the baby... our baby..." Fabian's gaze dropped to the blood pooling beneath her. His eyes narrowed dangerously, his entire body tensing as he scooped her up without a word. Just before turning away, he threw a sharp, ice-cold glance at Evelyn, who stood frozen in shock to the side. "Evelyn, you'd better pray I don't come for you." Evelyn stood there like a statue, the words slamming into her like a punch. Her eyes landed on the fireplace, where her prenatal report had already turned to ash. Tears silently streamed down her face. She and Gina were both pregnant with Fabian's baby, yet the difference in how they were treated was almost cruel. She had no idea how long she'd been standing there. The air was freezing, but even next to the fire, she felt nothing but cold. Expressionless, she finally stepped out of the estate. Though she looked calm on the outside, her heart had already shattered. She didn't even know why, but somehow, she ended up at the hospital. Staring at the blindingly white building in front of her, a heavy weight settled in her chest. She pushed open the door and walked down the corridor until she stood outside the emergency room. She kept telling herself—Gina's fall wasn't her fault. Gina had tripped herself. Clinging to that thought, she took another step forward. As her footsteps echoed in the quiet hallway, Fabian looked up instinctively—and the moment his eyes landed on her, all his worry turned to rage. The fire in his stare could've scorched the walls. "What the hell are you doing here?!" Evelyn lowered her head, not daring to meet his blazing eyes. Her voice was soft, almost shaking. "Fabian, it wasn't me. I didn't hurt her. She fell by herself..." But her explanation only made things worse. Fabian's mind replayed the bloody mess Gina had been in, his jaw tightening, anger blazing to the surface. "Evelyn, are you even human? Does your heart feel anything at all?!" His voice was ice-cold, like he was barely holding himself back. Only because they were in a hospital did he restrain himself from doing more. Evelyn's tone trembled as she tried again. "Gina's fall really had nothing to do with me. I didn't even know she was pregnant."
