Chapter 11 Take Me Away, Please

550 Words
Even though Lucas had tried to comfort her, Evelyn still looked pale as a sheet whenever the incident in the dark room crossed her mind. "Evie, you haven't eaten for days." Her expression flickered as her eyes shifted to Lucas. "Baby..." she whispered softly, her hand gently touching her belly. Seeing this, Lucas quickly brought the croissants to her lips. She finally began taking slow, reluctant sips. He let out a silent sigh of relief. The room was too quiet, so he turned on the TV. A news report was playing: "Evelyn, former Mrs. Fabian, has been captured in an indecent video circulating online." Hearing her name, Evelyn's head snapped up, eyes locked on the screen. The images flashing across it were ones she'd never be able to erase. The spoon slipped from her fingers and clattered onto the floor. Her mind was dragged right back to those filthy words, those leering eyes—every second of it still vivid. A calm but cutting voice rang out on the screen: "Evelyn has long divorced my son, Fabian. A woman like her has no place in the Jackson family. On another note, I'm happy to share—we have an heir." It was Fabian's mother. That look of disgust in her eyes, shown through a television screen, felt like a knife to Evelyn's heart. She felt filthy, tainted. Her already fragile nerves snapped. In panic, she leaped off the hospital bed, ripping out her IV, and ran barefoot out of the room. She couldn't take this anymore. She didn't want to hear or see anything connected to Fabian ever again. "Evie! Evie!" Lucas shouted as he bolted after her. The scandal was everywhere. It had exploded across the city. Most people instantly recognized the disgraced former Mrs. Jackson. "Isn't that Fabian's ex-wife? God... her face..." "So trashy. Bet she's been with a lot of men." "No wonder Fabian dumped her. I'd do the same." Every brutal word lodged itself in Evelyn's ears like glass shards. Each insult was like a slap in the face. Wearing nothing but a flimsy hospital gown, she ran through the halls, painfully aware of all the scornful eyes on her. Lucas finally caught up, finding her collapsed on the ground, surrounded by strangers whispering and staring. She was shaking uncontrollably. "Move! Get out of the way!" Lucas growled as he pushed through the crowd. He knelt beside her, gently wiping the blood from her face. "Evie, are you okay?" Streaked with tears, her face looked gut-wrenching. She clung tightly to his arm. "Take me away. Please, just get me out of here." She couldn't stay. Her name was already ruined. There was no place for her here anymore. "Lucas, please, I'm begging you. Just take me away." Lucas looked at her, heart heavy. He knew if this continued, the trauma might just break her completely. So he pulled strings through the Carter family, arranged for her discharge, and wiped every trace of her from the buzz. Evelyn vanished from Stellmere not long after. Fabian only found out Evelyn had gone missing the day after coming back from his business trip. He hung up his assistant's call without a word, clenched his fists, and couldn't even explain why this burning frustration was boiling up inside of him.
