Theo seemed edgy as he talked about what his children could do; it was like he was building his own little army. Bethany's own experience would have driven her to want the children to be able to protect themselves and be self-sufficient.
I feel he knew he had walked into danger coming here, and Bethany would argue that they needed her to protect our family. This is where she wanted to be and to protect her family, and he had come along for the ride.
