Back in the forest, I stepped farther to the edge of the bridge. My life flashed in my mind. I closed my eyes and then held my breath. Is this the end for me? Suddenly I heard a woman’s voice behind me.
“Stop! Please don’t do it! You still have so many better days ahead.”
I glanced at my back, but somehow my right foot slipped because of my sudden movement. As a result, my body tilted to the right. I was howling, realizing that I didn’t want to die.
The woman moved swiftly. With all her might, she held my body and put me to the ground. Then she hugged my head. “You’re safe now. Don’t worry. I got you.”
I yelped and then put my head on the woman’s lap. The woman stroked my head while whispering, “Emerald, calm yourself now. Take a deep breath!”
