CHAPTER 84 MARA’S POV I kept on staring at his name until my eyes burned. The message didn't change–no speech bubble, no response. But I didn't cry. I was already past that–past the sharp pain and the tightening in my chest whenever I remembered the way we used to… I swallowed. The voices downstairs had grown louder. I heard a door slam shut and someone cursed out loud. Mum. She was definitely not going to let my actions go. My phone buzzed in my hand and surprisingly this time, I didn't jump. The flicker of hope was gone as I already knew Alex wouldn't be the one texting. He was probably never going to talk to me. Not tonight. Maybe not anymore. Still, I looked down anyway.
