Chapter 1. Stay strong

Bella’s P.O.V   “BELLA!!” My mom shouted yet again. She had been calling me to come inside the house for the past fifteen minutes, but I didn't feel like going inside.    I was ignoring her, trying to sleep comfortably in the front seat of the car. I had my earphones in, trying to get lost in the music. Attempting to fool myself into thinking that everything was fine, everything was normal, and nothing had changed.   “BELLA!!” My mom yelled, only that time she was scolding me. I heard the sound of the car door opening, when I glanced over my mom was standing there looking so angry that her face had turned beet red.   “Is something wrong with you? I have been calling you for the past fifteen minutes, why haven't you answered me?” My mom asked, but I just gave her a bored stare.   “Sorry.” I replied sitting up in the seat.   “Just get out of the car and come into the house.” My mom ordered, I looked over at the house with distaste.   “Please, just let me sleep a little more. After all it's only a house, not a mansion. I’ll come in soon, I’m not really interested, you know.” I replied, but she just glared at me.    That was a clear warning from my mom, I knew it was also my final warning if I didn't do as I was told then she would kick my ass. I decided that really my best and only option was not to say anything else and just get out of the car. I lazily surveyed the house and surrounding property. Yes of course it was very beautiful, but I had no interest in anything it had to offer me.   “Are you just going to stand there all night or are you going to actually come inside? Go take a look at your room and tell me if you like it.” My mom dictated She was yet again ordering me,I glanced at her with a sly smile.   “Does that mean that if I don't like my room that we can leave this city and go back to our old one?” I asked, hoping for a yes. I grabbed her hand making my best puppy dog face, but alas it didn't work.   “Stop this nonsense right now, go inside as we both know that isn’t going to happen. I don't care if you like your room or not, we live in this city now and we are not leaving, at least not for another year. Now, don't make me repeat myself again.” My mom grumbled sternly as we went into the house.   I let out a sigh of tiredness, I had known that all of my efforts were meaningless due to the fact that my mom was never going to listen to me and we had already moved here. It was already too late. I took my luggage out of the car, carrying it inside the house to see that it wasn't just beautiful on the exterior it was also beautiful on the interior as well.   I took a look around, making my way  to the living room which had been filled with gorgeous furniture. Next was the kitchen taking a peek around there to find that it too was amazingly state of the art. This house was ten times better than our old house. It was clear that mom had spent a large amount of money on it. There was no way she would leave now.   “Bella, do you like the house?” My mom inquired, placing a hand on my shoulder. She had been  frustrated with me before, but I knew that she had just really wanted me to accept that we had a new life happily. I turned back to face her, wrapping her in a hug.   “Yes mom. I like the house a lot, but why did you spend quite so much money? You could have bought a two bedroom house instead, that would have been more than enough for the two of us. You didn't need to spend this much money.” I asked, making my mom look at me as I pulled away from the hug.   “I know it was expensive, but I bought it for you.One of my main priorities as your mother is to give you a good life. This house is safe for us and I would do anything for your safety.” My mom replied and I smiled. She is doing all of this for me, she wants me to have a comfortable and happy life.   “I love you, mom.” I murmured hugging her again.   “I love you too.” My mom replied, hugging me back.   “Now, go and take a look at your room. I know you weren't thrilled with the move, but I’m sure you’ll like your new school, new room, and will eventually get used to this city. You just have to give it a chance” My mom insisted as she went into the kitchen. I looked at the stairs and walked up them, heading towards my new room.   I walked into my room seeing that it was massive with an ensuite bathroom too. My eyes roamed all over, I had never thought that I would have this type of luxury in my life. Our old house was bad, there had been only two rooms with mostly  broken things, including the bathroom, but it had still been home. I had never asked my mom for much because I know all too well that she did everything she could to provide for me. But  One day that suddenly all changed, she told me that she had gotten a promotion and that we had to move again.   This has been a huge change in my life. I had always dreamed of living like this, but why do I feel like there was something wrong? I had suddenly gotten everything that I had ever wanted, it was a little scary as I had no idea how or why this was happening. Everything had changed so quickly.   I threw my purse onto the bed, followed  shortly by myself as I collapsed onto it. I closed my eyes realising how much I had been missing my bed. My old city was far away, we had travelled for what seemed like ages. I smiled lying there for about two minutes, when my phone began to ring and I searched for my purse. I took my phone out seeing that it was my friend Jesse calling me.   “Hello.” I said, answering the phone trying to sound normal. But all I could hear on the other end of the phone was the sound of laughter. He was laughing at me and it was making me angry.   “YOU JERK BETA!! Why are you laughing at me? If you don't stop laughing then I’ll stop answering your calls.” I threatened. The laughter died down, as he tried to gain control of himself. I could tell that he was still laughing but using his hand to cover his mouth as the sound was a little muffled, but there was nothing I could do about it right now. My situation was already bad enough, I really needed to talk to him. I needed a friend that I could vent all of my frustrations to.   “Ok, ok I’m sorry, can you tell me how are you? Have you finally arrived in your new city? Did you see your new house?” Jesse asked with curiosity, I was glad that he had finally stopped laughing.   “Yes, we arrived about half an hour ago. The house is very beautiful and so is my room. Everything is going well Jesse.” I replied, he grew quiet for a few seconds.   “Bella, are you ok?” Jesse questioned me in a serious tone, I flopped back on the bed.   “I don't know honestly. You know that I didn't want to leave the city or my old house, I wanted to stay with all of our friends.” I whined sadly. I was missing everything about my old home and  felt like crying. I have always lived with humans, no one had  known that I was a werewolf. The only werewolves in the city were Jesse and his pack, but they didn’t attend the same school as me. After living with humans for so long I had kind of forgotten that I was a werewolf, I had no idea what it was like to live in a pack.   “I know that you’re missing everything, you know that I didn't want you to leave. I asked you to join my pack so many times, but you had always refused. Bella, please tell me why you didn't want to live in a pack? Living in a pack is so much safer, living as a lone wolf will only lead you to danger. Please come back and join my pack, you know that I see you as more than just a friend.” Jesse pleaded. I took a deep breath. Even after moving so far away he was still trying to change my mind. I was a lone wolf, despite that he had  always been good to me, but his feelings had suddenly changed for me one day then he started to beg me to join his pack.   “Don't worry. I’ve been a lone wolf my whole life, I’m also not alone, I have my mom. I can't live without her, how could I leave her when she said she needed to change cities? Living as a lone wolf is not as dangerous as you think, I’ve never been in any danger. It's a rather good life actually, no one is ruling over you, there is no need to obey anyone. I am the ruler of my own life.” I claimed, laughing, but all I heard on the other end of the phone line from him was silence.   “Jesse….what's wrong?” I asked.   “Don't pretend to laugh, I know what’s really going on in your heart. There are too many questions about your life that you don't know the answers to. I know that you don't love me because you always go silent whenever I say I love you.” Jesse replied., Like a prophet, I indeed, went silent for a moment.   “I’m sorry, Jesse….” I finally mumbled. I knew that he was smiling sadly because that was what he always did when we had this acquired conversation.   “No need to apologize, Bella. I understand that you only want to be with your mate, I hope that you find him soon. Soon you will be eighteen.” Jesse said, making me giggle.   “I don't want a mate right now, in all honesty I think the Moon Goddess forgot to send mine to Earth. All of the girls in your pack found their mates as soon as they turned sixteen, yet here I am eighteen and still mateless. I don't think he has been born yet to be honest I really don't care.” I divulged sassily while he laughed again.   “Why? Because you are scared that he would be an Alpha?” Jesse poked, evilly laughing at me, hitting my weak spot. That jerk knew that I hated Alphas.   “I’m warning you, Jesse. Don't make fun of me or I’ll never talk to you again.” I grumbled, threatening him until he stopped.   “Okay, okay, but I’m sure that you’ll make some new friends there, you’ll definitely have your own little group. I know that you can't live without friends, so don't worry about it too much.” Jesse avowed, causing me to smile.   “Thanks, Jesse. I’ll definitely be making new friends at any cost. I know that I can make friends pretty easily. I mean, who wants to be all alone at school? Everyone wants to be in a group and have friends. I’m sure that I’ll make tons of friends!” I insisted to him, full confidence in my abilities as we both started laughing like crazy.   Jesse and I were secret friends. There had been only one wolf at my previous school and that was me. Other than Jesse, I had never met any other wolves in my life. His friends used to treat me well, but they didn’t talk to me much so I hung out more with my human friends. Everything changed when mom got her promotion. I had to change cities, houses and schools. I was glad that it was the beginning of the school year so that I wouldn’t have to worry about catching up on any missed assignments, but that was definitely a small blessing. No one liked to leave their friends to start all over somewhere completely new.   We kept talking for a while, before long I  didn't realize that it was already time for dinner, mom called me down. I took a quick shower then went to the dining room. I saw that mom had prepared some delicious food for us and I sat down to start eating. I don’t often get to eat food made by mom as she always seems to be working. Her job required her to travel a lot, so most of the time I was at home alone and eating outside.    Mom and I were laughing, talking about so many things. Mom was telling me about different fun things this city had to offer as well as various places I should visit on the weekends. I was excited to hear about them. They were all new experiences for me and I wanted to explore this new city. Now that I was stuck here, why not have some fun.    I was still missing my old school and my old friends, but now I had the chance to try something new. I didn’t understand why but my heart was still uneasy. Why was my heart not accepting this new life?   “Umm… Bella.” My mom started to say, causing me to glance  up at her. Suddenly I felt the atmosphere around us change.   “Yes?” I replied.   “You remember what I told you, right?” My mom said, I nodded.   “Yes, I remember mom.” I acknowledged. Not wanting to talk anymore about this matter, I looked down at  the food on my plate. I didn’t want to talk about it yet mom was once again wanting to bring it up. It just made me furious. Up until this moment I had been trying to be normal, smile and forget everything that had happened, but now I was having a hard time keeping calm.   “Good, I chose your new school specifically because there are no werewolves that attend it. You didn’t do a very good job at hiding the fact that you and Jesse were friends from me, I know he’s a werewolf. He’s also the main reason why I decided to change cities. No matter what, you can’t be friends with other werewolves. Stick with human’s and you’ll be able to live a normal life.” Mom lectured. I simply couldn’t help it, I threw my spoon down on the plate in frustration. I was more than done with this.   “But why mom? Why can’t I be friends with another wolf? Jesse was only a Beta. He was good to me and has never tried to harm me, he was the only wolf I knew. I have always lived with humans, I can still live like you want. But you need to give me some valid reasons for why I need to live this way. Why do we move so often? My dad….  Why?  Why did I lose him?” I asked. The last question came out softly, barely a whisper as I remembered my dad’s face. How he smiled at me the last time I saw his face before he left the house. Before he…   “This conversation is over, Bella. Go to your room!” Mom yelled, getting up from the table.   “Why mom? You can’t treat me like this. I’m not a child anymore. You have to tell me.” I demanded, needing an answer, but mom got fuming.   “There are no answers to your questions. Just do what I say and you’ll get everything that you want out of your life. You’ll be able to live the way you want to. There’s really no reason to continue this conversation.” My mom stated as I got up from my seat. Mom turned to me.   “Where are you going? It's night time.” My mom shouted as she saw me grabbing my coat. I did not reply to her, grabbing my purse too.   “I asked where you are going, Bella?” My mom asked yet again.   “I AM GOING TO DIE! I HOPE YOU’LL BE HAPPY BECAUSE I’M DYING EVERY SECOND THAT YOU MAKE ME LIVE THIS WAY!” I shouted back, starting to walk towards the door.   “Bella, wait! No you can’t go…” Mom begged as she followed me. I wasn’t paying attention to her anymore. I knew how I had spoken to her was wrong, that I was being rude, but I also had feelings that weren’t being considered. I was hurt and confused. I opened the door so that I could leave, but as I pulled it ajar I found someone was already standing there.   “Wow… Are you Bella? Finally, I found you, dear.” The man said with a smile.   “Who are you?” I questioned the man who had a evil mile on his face. I felt that he was a werewolf, but how does he know my name?    “Bella...” Mom was now standing there next to me.   “Bella…stay away from him…” My mom implored, pulling me back. She stood in front of me as if to shield me with her own body  from this stranger. I couldn’t understand what was going on. That man had entered the house.   “What are you doing here?” Mom asked him and he turned to her.   “Shouldn't you be asking me if I would like any tea? After all, we are meeting each other for the first time after eighteen years?” The man was egging my mom on, I could see  mom was getting furious.   “Leave Lucas. I don’t want to fight with you.” Mom said, but he ignored her instead sitting on the sofa staring at me. I was getting chills from the gleam in his eyes. He was looking me up and down, I could feel his dangerous aura coming off of him in waves. He was very powerful.    “We’ve been searching for your daughter for the last eighteen years. You hid her well, you should be proud of yourself. That being said, you expect me to go away now that I’ve found her, tsk tsk tsk, without at least having a little chat? Don’t you think that’s a bit unfair? Don’t break my heart like this.” The man I now knew as Lucas countered sarcastically.   “Mom… What’s going on? Who is he?” I inquired.   “He’s no one you need to worry about. Just go upstairs and pack your things.” Mom ordered. However,I didn’t move as Lucas stood up from the couch looking angry. He was moving towards my mom as if he intended to hurt her.    “The game of cat and mouse is over! You are going to hand your daughter over to us. I can see that she has become a beautiful woman. Perfect for…” Lucas was cut off by  my mom.   “Shut up Lucas.” She barked. I was scared. What did he mean, hand me over? Had he come here to take me? Mom pushed me away telling me again to grab my bag, which was still packed and lying in the hall .    “So you want to do this the hard way then?” He asked, I saw his wolf eyes. He was going to shift into his wolf.   “No!” My mom shrieked, he looked enraged.   “Alright, I’ll just have to kill you then take her anyway.” Lucas explained, shifting into his wolf. I backed away as mom also shifted. The whole house was a mess within seconds as they began to try to rip each other apart. I saw that my mom was hurt and bleeding. She was able to lure him outside of the house, she mind-linked me not to come out. I wanted to help her, but she wouldn’t let me and I didn’t want to be a distraction.    Suddenly mom came back into the house, immediately closed the door, locking it. He was still out there having turned back into his human form once again. I saw how badly hurt mom was, she had lost an eye,her whole body was covered in claw and bite marks. She was losing too much blood. I started crying in despair when I saw her condition because I knew there was no way that she would be able to survive this.    “Mom…what’s going on? Who is he? What can I do to help you?” I pleaded with her, but she just shook her head.   “No… He’s not dead. He’ll attack again. You… You can’t help me… but you have to save yourself. Run away from here… Run away from this city and never come back…” My mom groaned, I shook my head.   “No, I won’t leave you. I’ll stay and fight him with you.” I denied, but my mom suddenly slapped me.   “I TOLD YOU, YOU CAN’T FACE HIM!” My mom shouted,I cried harder. She had never slapped me before.   “Always remember to never come into contact with any werewolves. Live like a normal human. Save yourself at any cost. Never forget that I love you. Everything That I’ve ever done has been to protect you.” My mom said, hugging me tightly. I hugged her back, but I was still not ready to leave her. Lucas was hitting the door, slowly breaking through.   “Go!” mom snapped, pushing me away. I got up, opening the back door. She smiled at me, telling me to run away. As I ran, the sounds of him finally breaking through the front door reached my ears pushing me hard and further into the woods.. I was running through the woods towards the road. It was only two kilometers away, but I was still able to hear my mom. She was fighting him, stalling for time so that I would be able to get further away. I could hear her screams. I was losing my mom, with every loss she was inching closer and closer to oblivion. She knew that what she was doing would lead to her death, yet she seemed to almost welcome it.   I had reached the main road when I heard mom’s voice.   “Bella… Stay strong.” My mom said, mind-linking me. It was the last time that I would hear my mom’s voice before she succumbed to death. I fell to my knees under the sheer weight of loss and understanding what it means. She had left me alone in this world….
