Chapter Fifty-Five

1498 Words

The clumping of my crutches, and the scraping of my braced leg seemed to bounce off from every empty wall, announcing my presence like a gong. It was dark, and my eyes struggled to adjust. I used the light on my cellphone to try and cut through the dust motes, but it was awkward to hold the light and ambulate myself through the construction debris at the same time. Since my presence had already been announced, I shouted into the darkness. "Carson! Come out!" I heard some rustling toward the back and aimed my light in that direction, but of course the man moved through the darkness. "I told Annie you'd come." At first all I could see was a white smile in the darkness, like a grinning Cheshire cat.
