Chapter 45
“Max! I’m home!” Margot called out from the door as she took off her shoes and changed into the house slippers.
“Auntie Maggie!” A precious squeal sounded from the living room. Margot parked her newly bought suitcase by the niche when she saw her oldest niece running toward her.
“Hi, Mindy!” Margot happily got down to her niece's level and scooped her up in a loving hug.
“How wuz yoor vabacaton?” Mindy asked with her.
“It was amazing, but I missed you so much!” Margot replied as she smothered the little girl in kisses.
“Hey! Welcome home!” A gasp escaped Margot's throat as she recognized her sister's voice, a sound that cut through the silent terror she had been living in. With desperate speed, she carefully lowered Mindy, her hands trembling, and rushed into the kitchen.
