Chapter 1 *Ring*Ring*Ring* “Hello?” “Oh, baby sister!” “What do you want, Max?” “Margot, honey, can you do me a huge favor?” “What?” “You know the Desert Moon pack, right?” “I think so. The Alpha is a gigantic man with a sh*t ton of tattoos. Darian or something like that?” “It’s Dorian, but yeah. Anyways, the ranked females are food friends of mine, and one of them just called. They need some help with something, but neither Stu nor I can leave because of the kids.” “And what is this something?” “They need the help of some good magic in case a crazed werewolf uses the Scent of One’s Love’s potion on their Gamma male.” “Oh, yeah, I can help with that. Let me tell Ethan, and I’ll head over there. Are they expecting me? I don’t want to teleport there and get eaten.” “Yes, they are. Just let them know that you’re my kid sister and you’ll be fine.” “Cool. I will do that.” “Thanks, darlin’. Bye.” “Buh-bye.” “Who was that?” Ethan, a powerful wizard and Margot’s fiancé, asked. “That was Max. She said a werewolf pack needs my help.” “A werewolf pack? Since when do we offer our services to werewolves?” Ethan asked with displeasure. “Since a friend of Max’s runs this pack,” Margot replied, got up, and started to get dressed. “You better not do anything stupid, Margot,” Ethan warned her. “Ethan, babe, you worry too much,” Margot responded with a smile. Ethan rolled his eyes, not liking the fact that Margot still did whatever she wanted and was always at her sister’s beck and call. Ethan had a plan for Margot after they got married. She wouldn’t know it until it was too late. “I’ll be back as soon as I can, love.” Margot kissed his cheek. Ethan didn’t say anything in return and just watched as she teleported out of their room. He gnashed his teeth and made a phone call. When Margot landed at the Desert Moon pack, she greeted the men in front of her delightedly, but was met with a growl from the largest of the men. “Who are you!?” “Whoa, chill out, Alpha wolf!” Margot immediately knew from his aura that he was the Alpha. “My name is Margot. My sister Max sends her regards.” “You’re Margot?” one of the other men asked. Margot nodded and was going to reply when she was suddenly swept off her feet. “AHH!” Margot screamed at being grabbed out of nowhere. But that’s when she was startled by a loud snarl, and a word that caught her off guard. “MATE!” When she was placed back on her feet, Margot came face to face with a burly man with fury in his eyes. He embraced her in a bear hug and inhaled her scent as if it were oxygen to his lungs. “Fury, you’re smothering her! Stand down!” the Alpha growled with authority. Fury reluctantly let go due to his Alpha’s command and backed away from Margot, but only by a couple of feet. His wolf, Battle, was pacing inside Fury’s head because he wanted his mate, but also because he could sense another man’s pheromone all over her. Aries, one of Fury’s comrades, had to insert himself between Fury and Margot, pushing him back to protect Margot from Battle’s intense possessiveness. “You need to keep Battle under control,” Aries warned Fury. “I know what it feels like to want to just run to her and make her yours, but you have to bear in mind that she’s not one of us. She’s something else,” Aries whispered in Fury’s ear. Fury closed his eyes and comprehended what Aries had just told him. After taking a few deep breaths to calm his wolf, Fury was able to think clearly without the haze of the mate bond controlling him. “I’m good, Aries. I’m good,” Fury assured. Aries nodded and released his hold on Fury. “Holy f*cking hell! What the f*ck was that!? Alpha Dorian, why did your pack member attack me?!” Margot screamed. “I’m sorry, Margot,” Dorian quickly apologized. “It appears that your sudden appearance has snapped Fury’s mate bond into place, and he rushed you because of his wolf’s need to keep you away from us,” Dorian explained. Margot blinked rapidly, stunned and silent at what Dorian had just told her. “Ohhhh… Is that when a werewolf finds their soulmate?” Dorian nodded. “Ah, sh*t,” Margot muttered, her face falling in regret. She bit the bottom of her lip when she realized what this meant for her. Fury didn’t miss her expression, and he started to feel uneasy. “Margot, what’s wrong?” Mikey, the Gamma asked. “Uhh…Gee, this is kind of awkward. I’m not sure how to explain this.” Margot passively looked at Fury with remorse in her eyes. She felt for him, but she knew she had to tell him the truth. “Fury, is it?” Fury nodded. “I’m sorry, Fury, but …” Fury’s eyes widened when he realized what was about to happen. “I’m engaged,” Margot said as she held up her left hand, showing her 3-carat diamond engagement ring. “WHAT?!” All of the men hollered at the same time. “What the hell? Dorian, why would the Moon Goddess mate him with someone who’s already engaged?” “I don’t know, Brandon. Selene normally wouldn’t do something like that,” Dorian quickly replied, just as confused as everyone else. “What if it’s like what happened with Carter? You know how he reacted to Gizmo, but it was Sarah’s baby’s scent he reacted to. What if Fury is reacting to someone else’s scent on her?” Brandon theorized hastily to try to rectify the ineptness and prevent Fury from having a complete meltdown. “This can’t be happening! Why would the goddess f*ck me over this way?! WHY!?” Fury cried out in disbelief. Margot could feel his pain, more than she cared to admit. “I’m so sorry. I really am. I didn’t think I would be a werewolf’s mate. But I love my fiancé. We’ve been together since high school. God, I’m so sorry, Fury!” Margot sobbed. She truly felt bad for hurting him, but the pain radiating from Fury surrounded her entire being like an inferno, and she didn’t know how to deal with it. Margot had never felt someone else’s pain this way before. “Margot, do you have any other sisters other than Maxine? Cousins? Any other female that you could have come into contact with recently?” Brandon questioned. “No. I don’t. It's only Max and me. And our cousins are all men. Maxine and I are the only witches in our family line, aside from our mother and aunts. That is until her girls gain their powers,” Margot answered. “Fury, are you by chance—” “No, Mikey! I’m not f*cking gay!” Fury snarled. Mikey raised his hands. “Okay, my bad,” Mikey said. “I’m sorry, Fury. I honestly don’t know what else to say,” Margot softly said. “Can’t you just break off your engagement!?” “What!? NO! I LOVE HIM!” Margot angrily replied. “I told you we’re high school sweethearts. We’ve been engaged for a year, and our wedding is in a week!” “What about me!? My goddess made you for me!” “Then your goddess made a mistake.” “Fury, that’s enough,” Dorian commanded. “Selene has made mistakes in the past when it comes to the mate bond. It’s not as if this isn’t unheard of. Unfortunately, it took too long for the two of you to meet, which led to this unfortunate incident. You need to reject her.” “NO! I will not reject my goddess-given mate, Alpha! How could you, of all people, tell me to do that!? Do you not believe in the sanctity of the mate bond!?” “Of course, I do! We all do! But we also know when it's time to cut our losses and move forward. Margot has given her heart to someone else, and asking her to end her relationship with that person is selfish of you. As her partner, you should want her to be happy, even if that happiness isn’t with you.” “I can’t f*cking believe this!” “Dorian? How does the process of rejection work?” Margot asked. Fury’s eyes bulged out of his head when he heard this. “If he doesn’t do it, then I will.” “What?! You’re actually going to reject me!?” “I’m sorry, but this needs to be done. I heard what can happen to a wolf who finds their mate but doesn’t sever the bond. I don’t want that to happen to you. I can’t put you through that kind of pain. The rejection has to be done.” “You say, I, your full name and your coven’s name, reject, your mate’s full name and pack name, as my mate,” Dorian explained to Margot. “Alpha! How could you!?” Fury hollered. “This has to be done, Fury. You can’t force her to accept anything she doesn’t want to. That includes being your mate,” Dorian said sternly. “But you’re my Alph—” “I, Margot Erica Combs, reject, Fury … Erm .. What’s his last name?” No one wanted to answer because they didn’t want to see Fury get his heart ripped out. Unfortunately for them, Dorian, Brandon, and Mikey knew it was inevitable. “His full name is Odin Elias Olsen,” Mikey answered painfully. “I, Margot Erica Combs of the Silver State Coven, reject Odin Elias Olsen of the Desert Moon pack as my mate.” Once Margot recited the rejection and severed the bond with Fury, he fell to his knees and screamed in undeniable heartache. Because of her empathic powers, Margot felt it all, and the pain was excruciating. “AHHH!” she screamed at the top of her lungs. “Oh, sh*t!” Brandon shouted and ran over to her and caught her before her body made impact with the ground. “Why is she in pain? She’s not a wolf?” Aries questioned. “I’m – I’m an—Empath,” Margot stuttered between her sobs. “Mikey, call Max and Stuart!” Dorian instructed. Mikey nodded and did what he was told. “Hello?” “Max, you and Stuart need to get here ASAP!” “Mikey? It’s almost two in the morning. What the hell?” “It’s your sister. Something has happened, and she needs you. Now!” “What happened to Margot!?” Max jumped out of bed. Just then, she heard Margot screaming. “Mikey! What’s happening to my sister?” Maxine quickly got dressed. Stuart heard her shout and also jumped out of bed. They got dressed as Mikey explained to them what had happened. Maxine was dumbfounded. Hearing that her sister had been mated to a wolf, and that she had to reject him, was something she never could have ever anticipated. When they arrived at the Desert Moon pack, Maxine knelt beside her sister, who was still sobbing and clutching her chest. “What’s wrong with her?” Maxine asked as she cradled her sister. She started to bombard Mikey and Dorian with questions about why her sister was suddenly ill. “She’s not ill. She’s experiencing the severing of the mate bond,” Dorian explained. “Sh*t. It’s because she’s an empath, Max,” Stuart told her. “I don’t get it,” Max said. “We’ll explain later. Just get her home. She needs rest. She’ll be fine in a few hours. But being near Fury is making it worse,” Dorian said. Max and Stuart quickly teleported Margot to their house. Once she was far away from Fury, Margot’s powers started to dissipate, and the pain she felt from him did as well. “Margot, sweetie, are you okay?” Maxine asked with concern in her voice. “I will be.” “What happened? How are you a mate to a werewolf?” “I’m not. Not anymore, at least,” Margot answered. “Stu, honey, can you get her some water?” Stuart nodded and conjured a pitcher and a glass. After taking a few sips and calming down, Margot explained to Maxine what happened. “Damn…” Stuart grimaced. “Oh, sweetie. You were feeling his pain?” Maxine asked, and Margot nodded. “I knew a rejection was painful for werewolves, but I had no idea it could be this painful,” Margot sniffled. “Do you want us to take you home?” Stuart asked. “No. I can’t let Ethan see me like this. If he finds out I was mated to a werewolf, he’s going to blow a f*cking gasket. I don’t need the drama a week before the wedding,” Margot replied. “You can always stay here, sweetheart. I’ll tell Ethan you stopped by and I made you stay,” Maxine told her. Margot nodded. Maxine escorted her to their guest bedroom and tucked her in, just like she did when Margot was a child. She cast a sleeping spell on Margot to help her sleep and then went back to her room, where Stuart was pacing. “How is she?” Stuart asked when Maxine walked in. “Resting. I had to cast a spell to help her sleep.” Stuart sighed and nodded. “Honey, what are the odds that she’s mated to a werewolf?” “Rare, but not unheard of.” “But with a week before the wedding? Do you think the Moon Goddess is playing a sick joke?” “I don’t know, honey, I honestly don’t. And it’s not like we can ask her,” Stuart responded. “We can’t, but Allie can,” Maxine suggested. “It’s late, Max. And I’m sure Dorian will tell her everything in the morning.” “Yeah, you’re right. He never hides anything from her,” Maxine agreed. “But still. Don’t you find it odd that this is happening?” “I do find it odd. Especially since no one approves of your sister marrying Ethan.” “But you know Margot doesn’t listen to anyone. She doesn’t even listen to Ethan,” Maxine said, rubbing her face. “That’s why he’s a d*ck to her, but she doesn’t see it that way,” Stuart stated. All Maxine could do was sigh heavily and pray that there was a good reason for the sudden madness.
