I had no idea how long we laid there and stared at one another while I waited for her to react. The seconds ticked by, turning into minutes, and still, she didn’t say a word. She laid almost as still as she had when I came in, except that her eyes were open now and she was facing me. But other than that, there were absolutely no differences. I started wracking my brain, trying to figure out why she wasn’t reacting. She had returned the book… And she didn’t exactly strike me as the type of person who would return a book without actually reading it.
