The decision had been made ages before I had even come to the realisation that I needed to make the decision. Although I had hesitated for a moment only, I knew what it was that I needed to do, knew what was required of me if I wanted everyone whom I loved and cared for to walk away today without being hurt. And I knew that there were many standing on this battlefield who would be unhappy with my decision, many of them who would call me a fool and a coward, and whatever other name in the book that they could think of.
But none of that mattered, and I knew that it wouldn’t matter in a few moments either. I needed to focus on the bigger picture here, and not focus on all of the negative aspects of this entire situation. It would be done soon. In a matter of minutes if I was lucky.
