CHAPTER FIVE FIRST HIGH SCHOOL PARTY Somedays you sit down and wonder if the world just hates you. For example, take my current predicament into consideration, what in the world’s f*****g coincidence is this? Tutoring Theo of all people? Forget the fact that he is my alpha. He is the boyfriend to the very girl making my life hell in school. What exactly am I supposed to do? “And she was absolutely certain she couldn’t pair you with someone else?” Jack questions for probably the millionth time. “I literally begged her and she said there were very limited number of students. Everyone else is already paired up. I tried negotiating with other tutors but no one wants that Fairchild boy,” I grab his wrists, “ I need this. But what I don’t need is another reason to have Valentina breathing down my neck. Goddess knows what this will make her do,” As though on cue, Valentina and her minions walk inside the class. She pauses dramatically at the front, her gaze running through the students, my breath hitching with the hopes that she is not seeking trouble with me. Her eyes stop, holding mine captive in a blank gaze. Could she have perhaps found out already about the tutoring? My underarms grow clammy, my heart beat spiking and all I can do not to regurgitate everything I ate for breakfast, is bunch my fingers over the edge of my sweater. She begins to walk over, her steps seemingly taped in slow motion and I can feel a bead of cold sweat trickling on the side of my face. “Gina. I love that new channel bag,” she suddenly smiles, walking past me to parch herself on top of a seat at the back of the class. I release a shaky breath. f**k! I cannot live this, fearing for every breathing second of my life. Jack holds the same look of relief. Thankfully, the math teacher, Mr. Grosvenor walks in, his glasses parched on his nose. I’ve never dreaded chemistry class more than I do today. The one class I do share with the three musketeers, is English but today they had all skipped it for some reason. I’ve always been okay with that. I mean, I never cross paths with them and I doubt they have noticed my existence in that class. I prayed that Theo also skips Chemistry today. We walk into the lab, lab coats adorned and our lab goggles in hand. My gaze quickly scans around and thankfully he isn’t here. “Fingers crossed he won’t be coming to this either,” Jack whispers as we settle in our normal seats at the front of the class, next to the windows overlooking the parking lot. “I hope the goddess loves me at least this much,” I say, flipping the text book to where we’d stopped last. “So are you still going to the party?” Jack questions. “Do you think we should?” I angle my head to look at him, “ I mean, this could either be the moment in high school we get to exaggerate to our kids in the future or we get the worst humiliation of our lives and becoming the laughing joke of the Everwood High,” “I know but maybe-oh,” his eyes widen and I drag my gaze towards where he is looking. Theo just walked in with Mateo and seemingly everyone is surprised. Whispers quickly fill the lab especially when the two boys pause in front of the class, eyes searching. I gulp. Mrs. Calloway almost immediately walks in after them. “Good morning students.,” she places her guide book on the table, “Mr. Fairchild and Mr. Ortega will be joining us for the rest of the year. Alright boys. Go ahead and take your seats. Theo, you are with Amber, Mateo with Jack,” If there is a moment I’m supposed to be fainting, it should be now. Not because I’m going to be sitting next to Theo for the rest of the year. But because every single pair of eyes is turned on me. Theo doesn’t seem to get affected. Instead, he comes over as Jack mouths a sorry to me before going to another empty seat with Mateo in tow. Theo barely glances at me and for a moment I’m very much relieved. Any interaction with him would just add more days of bullying from Valentina. Believe me, I’ve had enough of those. The one thing I need now is to lay low long enough for my mother to get that job in the city and we will move. For the first time ever, I find myself trying so hard to concentrate. Chemistry is my favorite subject and now, I can see Mrs. Calloway’s lips moving but I have no idea what exactly she is saying. Taking a deep breath, I block Theo out of my mind, pretending instead its Jack who is sitting next to me. To an extent, that helps and before I know it, I’m back to my normal, studious self. The class eventually comes to and end. Theo gathers his books, heading straight for the door without as much as a backward glance. “You are still coming for the party, right?” I give a start when Mateo suddenly speaks near my ear and immediately, an apologetic look touches his gaze, “ I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you,” By now, most students are already piled out of class. I have no idea where I got the courage but I find myself speaking up, without the need to faint. “Okay. I bite. What’s the deal?” I cross my arms, hugging my books. “What?” He raises an eyebrow in confusion. “People like you are not nice to people like me, unless it’s a ruse for some devastation about to descend don me. So yeah, what’s the deal?” “People like me?” “You know, every rich kid in this god forsaken town,” I shrug, “ If Valentina put you up to this, just tell me now,” “First of all, I’m not even friends with Valentina,” He puffs his chest ever so slightly but its enough to distract me for a brief second, “ Two, I just thought it would be nice to invite my neighbor from across the street for a party at my friend’s house. All you could have just said is no,” “Oh,” I clear my throat, “ I guess if that’s the case, I will be coming with my friend then,” He offers me a small smile and I’m ready to die, “I guess I’ll catch you later then,” He walks out of the class and I remain standing star-struck, wondering what the hell just happened. Jack, who had been outside, clearly eavesdropping, badges back into the empty class save for me. “D-Did you hear that?” My lower lip is trembling. “We are going to our first freaking high school party!” He matches my excitement, “ Do you think its anything like the movies?” “We are about to find out,”
