CHAPTER FORTY-TWO RIDE OR DIE I don’t remember walking to Jack’s house but he has always been my ride or die. He knows that. Maybe that’s why my first instinct is always to run to him. One second I’m staring at my mother’s face, at the storm of sorrow and guilt swimming in her eyes, and the next I’m standing in front of his door with shaking fingers and a heart that feels like it’s bleeding out. He opens it within seconds, like he was already waiting for me. One look at me and all the usual sarcasm and smugness fades from his face. “s**t. Amber…” “I-I didn’t know where else to go,” I mumble, the words crumbling on my tongue like ash. “You’re always welcome here.” He steps aside and lets me in, guiding me to the couch like I’m made of glass. And honestly? That’s exactly how I feel. F
