CHAPTER SEVEN
THE BEGINNING OF TROUBLE
Its exactly nine-thirty-three when Jack pulls to a halt outside the Sinclair mansion. I’ve often heard the rumors of how extravagant it looked but nothing could have prepared me for the beautiful monster of a house staring back at me. If it were some other time, I would have taken a second to ogle at it. Jack does gulp at the sight and honestly, I don’t blame him. Students are making their way inside where two senior students are standing at the door, making sure only the invited ones are getting through.
“Well, well. Look what the cat dragged in. The mutt of the century, “I shift my focus to the girl approaching, flanked by her minion, all of them dressed to kill. Its almost like a clear, visual distinction of the difference in social status between us.
“Not today, Valentina,” I brush past her, heading towards the entrance. I’m feeling an array of emotions flooding through me and I can’t stop them for whatever reason. Something in me is screaming that tonight is going to be more than I bargained for.
“You don’t get to walk away when I’m talking to you,” Val’s angry voice finds its way to my eardrums just as we are about to reach the door, “As a matter of fact, what are you doing here? Its invites only kind of party for a reason,”
“And?” Seriously what is up with me today? Is this a side effect of the impending shifting?
“We were invited by Mateo,” Jack pipes in, hooking his arm around mine while laughing nervously, “And we are going to be out of your way,”
“Mateo?” she scoffs, “You expect me to believe that he invited you to this party? You of all people?”
I take a deep breath, exhaling before turning to Jack, “Maybe this is a bad idea. We should probably just go,”
“I’m beginning to agree with you on that,”
I don’t wait a second for Val’s retort and instead, I begin propelling Jack towards his car. There is this anger growing inside me and I’m certain if she were to speak one more word, my nails would be in her skin, ripping through it. I’ve never felt emotions of this magnitude before. It should scare me but for some reason, it doesn’t.
“Hey, birthday girl, ” I come to halt right in front of Mateo who is wearing that mouthwatering smile again, “ You came,”
“W-we are leaving,” I mumble.
“Already?” A frown etches its way over his handsome features, “You can’t possibly be drunk already. Wait, did someone refuse to let you go in? I told you to tell them I invited you,”
“It’s- “
“You did what?” A quieter tone, tainted deep with a certain degree of anger spoke just as Theo comes in the vicinity.
“Its her birthday. So, I asked her to come over to the party. Is that a problem?”
“Without asking me?” For a flip second, the anger become visible on Theo’s face, his jaw clenching. His whiskey-colored eyes that appear darker under the street lights are solely focused on Mateo; almost as though the latter has done something so irredeemable to him.
“Look, I’m sorry that seeing me here is making you uncomfortable, Theodore. I get that I’m supposed to tutor you and it makes things rather complicated to you for some reason. Believe me, if there was another person, I could exchange you with, I would in an instant. But I truly need this to work,” I say, hoping that somehow that works.
“Wait, you are tutoring him?” Mateo laughs., turning to Theo, “You lied to me. You said, its just some random kid at school,”
“She is a random kid at school, is she not?” Theo questions rather coldly, before moving closer to me, I can almost feel the coldness emanating from his whole demeanor, seething through my every skin, “You stay out of my way tonight and I won’t have to kick you out of the party,”
He walks off before I can even process any of it. Mateo only shakes his head, almost as though he pities him.
“Come on, lets go have some fun at the party,” his put his arms over both Jack and I’s shoulders, propelling us forward.
I only shrug when Jack and I shared a look. I mean, what’s the worst that can happen right? The two seniors at the door barely looked at us and instead, they joked for a bit with Mateo before we walked through. The moment I walk inside the house, Jack and I release a collective gasp of wonder. The inside was even better than the outside. The music is a bit loud and students are either making out, doing drinking games gossiping, each of them armed with a blue plastic party cup.
“Mateo,” Brian screams from the top of the staircase. He is shirtless and well, one can’t do anything except admire just how ripped he is. Especially considering just lean he appears to be.
“Brian” Mateo shouts back before turning to us, “Make yourself at home. Oh, and don’t shy from drinking. My chauffeur will be here to pick us when the party ends. As for your car, I can have someone drive it to your home,”
He pats our shoulders and runs off upstairs, leaving us smack in the middle of a crowd of students. Parties have a different kind of anxiety. Its not the same in school when I’m trying to figure out what kind of bullying, I would go through on that particular day. No, its something else. Maybe I do have a bit of social anxiety.
“Alright. Where do we start?”
I scan the room, my gaze falling on several kegs sitting in the corner, right next to a huge bowl of fruit punch that is probably spike, “ How about over there?”
“Good,” We make our way over, grabbing some unused party cups.
All it takes is one taste of the fruit punch and I know its spiked with an outrageous amount of alcohol. Yeah, well. If tonight is going to suck, I might as well enjoy myself.
