At dawn, Orpheus woke up dazed. He stared up at the ceiling for a moment before looking down to see Zala lying entirely on top of him. This was the first time he had seen Zala as a child. It was that memory that had him jolting awake. This time, it was a very short one. He, Zala, and Blaize were crouching down in front of a tree by the stream they usually went to. Zala was poking at a newly hatched bird with a branch. The animal looked so wrinkled, wet, and featherless that although they were all disgusted by it as kids, they couldn’t help but stare.
