CHAPTER 17 The chained wizard that the kids named Bilget was at the gate in the morning, waiting while the men he sent in grabbed Penrys and hustled her out. She dragged her feet and pretended to be worse than she was. Her chain felt almost depleted, but her native power was slowly recovering, as slowly as her health. The children were kept at bay by the rods that the guards flourished. They walked her back up the path to the main building, and she tried to spare her bruised bare feet. She snuck a peek at her surroundings, now that she could make them out better—a complex series of buildings, and about three dozen people tucked away out of sight, all wizards to her mind-scan, like the men surrounding her.
