He smiled. “You may have noticed how few ended up in Ellech. No, that’s our back door, our escape route if something goes wrong. My father died before he could see our first draft of specimens but he helped to plan it.
“You see, they weren’t only necessary for us to perfect the techniques. They depart from us chained but blank, and prepare the world for us by their dispersed presence. They have no memory of us, any more than you do. If we were to join them, chained but not blank, fully aware, no one will be able to tell we’re any different. A perfect way to hide, if we must. No need for us to travel unclothed and unequipped, like the others.”
