“I am immune to poison?” the princess asked her husband who flashed her a mischievous mysterious look before wrapping his arms around her waist.
“Max. We spoke about this,”she warned while he raised his sexy eyebrows at her, making her heart flutter.
“About what, My Love?”
“We…we don’t have to pretend to love each other. We…”
“I am not pretending, are you?” he interjected before his hands trailed down to her buttocks.
“Max!” she cried, her heart already pounding.
“Let…me…love…you, Zania.”
His emphasis of every word and that baritone voice got her all gooey inside.
“I…” she cursed inside, her body betraying her as usual and let out a sigh of relief when someone knocked at the door. She moved a distance from him, grateful for whoever that was.
“Enter!” the prince shouted and quickly fixed his clothes.
“Your Highnesses,” Sir Luke greeted. He studied the very well, alive and flushed Queen before his eyes settled on his friend. He wanted to laugh at the unmistakable bulge on his pants but kept a straight face instead.
“Did you get anything out of the chef?” the prince asked, and cursed inside when Sir Luke shook his head.
“He killed himself before I got to him. The guards say he grabbed one of their swords and plunged it into his chest,” Sir Luke explained, his tone alone telling the prince that he did not believe the guard’s explanation.
“Ha!” the prince exclaimed, a deja vu moment hitting him. That was exactly how every prisoner who could have told him the truth died in his past life.
“Execute all the guards who were in charge of him,” he commanded, shocking the princess.
“Max?” she questioned before coming closer and placing her hand on his arm. They had agreed to be united. She wanted him to explain his harsh decision without giving the impression of questioning him. Her gesture did exactly that and he recognised and appreciated it.
“I cannot have prisoners killing themselves like they supposedly did before. Celia, Blake, the game ranger and all others died like that under my watch. Never again,” he swore before repeating his command to Sir Luke. “Execute them all. My wife and I are indisposed until further notice. No word on Zania’s condition to anyone, leave everyone guessing.”
Sir Luke nodded before leaving.
“Are you not being too harsh?” Princess Zania asked the moment Sir Luke was gone.
The prince chuckled, prompting her to ask.
“What?”
“You did not oppose me when Luke was here,” he pointed out, his expression making her blush.
“We agreed to project a united front.”
“And united we shall be, in this lifetime and the next, forever. Where were we?”
She was moving away from him and shook her head when he started undressing.
“Not on this,” she objected, his intentions very clear to her.
“I am about to make love to my wife. I think she deserves a reward. Do you want me to stop?” he dared her before unzipping her gown.
“Seriously?” she questioned.
“Yes, I am serious.”
“I should tell you to stop when you are already naked and your spear like that?”she asked in disbelief. His very being was making her burn for him, and he knew it.
“What is wrong with that? Are you mesmerised by my naked form, wife?”
She rolled her eyes and surrendered her treacherous body to him.
An hour later, Princess Zania laid in Prince Maxwell’s arms, conflicted.
“I am glad that we spoke about our past life. I should have brought it up days ago but I was not certain that you knew,” the prince told her.
“You thought I would think that you are insane?”she asked and he confirmed.
“Yes and I was terrified of spooking you.”
She laughed, prompting him to ask. “What?”
“I was afraid of the same thing. Celia suggested that I might have had a bad dream.”
He traced her back with his fingers, his heart full. It was like a big weight was lifted off his shoulders.
“Look at that, we have the same fears,” he said before squeezing her buttocks, making her gasp. “And same desires. We are making progress,” he added, making her blush.
“We need to get up and see what is happening out there,” she suggested. She needed to think about everything that happened and could not do that with him like this.
“Do we have to?” he sulked and pulled her closer.
“Max! Someone tried to kill me. I doubt the chef was working on his own. We have executed guards. We have to address the staff,”she told him and shut out his sexy alluring body that was pressed against hers.
“Fine,” he finally conceded.
They had just descended the stairs when the princess spotted a maid she had been searching for since the day she moved to the castle. She let go of the prince’s arm and approached the woman who was polishing the furniture with her head down.
“Sophie!” the princess could not hide her excitement at seeing the only maid who adored her in her past life.
Sophie almost fell down from shock. She would have fallen had the princess not caught her on time.
“Your…Your Highness. You…you know my name?” Sophie could not hide her shock.
“Of course, my dear. I have been looking for you.”
“For me?” Sophie asked before dropping on her knees and begging for her life. “Forgive me if I did not do a good job. I will do better next time,” she pleaded. She did all the work the other maids regarded as lowly. Maybe she missed a spot when cleaning the toilets. Maybe she chipped one of the antiques when polishing them.
“Don’t be ridiculous! You work harder than anyone here, it stops today. Get on your feet. You are my lady in waiting from now on,” the princess declared while other maids exchanged surprised and envious looks.
Sophie looked around to confirm that their queen was indeed talking to her.
“I? I am a mere servant with no title, My Queen. My family members are not nobles. We are nobodies.”
“Not anymore. What title would you like, Lady Sophie?”
“Your Highness?” Sophie could not believe her ears. No one in her entire genealogy had a title. Even other maids regarded themselves superior to her and she had no problem with it.
The princess laughed before embracing her. Sophie did a lot to help her in her past life. She risked her life a multiple times for her.
“Leave all that here. You only serve me from now on, second Countess of Jolly island,”the princess commanded right when a distraught Mary ran inside and threw herself into the Prince’s arms.
Princess Zania flinched at the sight, an uncomfortable feeling rising inside her.
“Get over yourself, Zania. He was never yours,” she rebuked herself but still could not suppress her feelings. She sent Sophie off to get prepared for her new role and focused all her attention on the two people who caused her so much pain in her past life.
