We stayed on the bench for a while longer. Avery had stopped shaking, and her breathing was back to normal. The sun was low, and a few students were making their way back to their dorms.
"I should probably get you home," I said. "It is getting late."
She nodded and gathered her books. Luca and Jackson said their goodbyes, each giving her another hug before they left. I helped her carry the rest of her things to my car.
The drive started quietly. She stared out the window, and I stole glances at her from time to time. She looked tired but calmer than before. I wanted to make sure she knew she could trust me.
"Avery," I said carefully, "can I ask you something?"
