I still had a few hours before the meeting, after slaving away at my work, but my mind kept drifting back to Emory and her rejection. I was still upset, but deep down, I knew I had to get over it if I wanted any chance of winning her over.
She had every reason to reject me. From the moment she was a little girl, I had treated her as a bother, pushing her away, ignoring her, and making her feel unwanted. The things I had said, the things I had done—how could I expect her to forget? How could I ever think she would just let it slide because of the bond between us?
I’d gotten lucky that her rejection failed—something that puzzled me, but I pushed it to the back of my mind for now. There were bigger things to worry about.
