Laura was bent over at the waist, the horse’s hoof clenched between her knees. Sweat ran down her face and dripped off her nose as she used a rasp to smooth the wall of the hoof. Her maternal grandfather had been a farrier, and she’d learned the basics from him. In fact, she was wearing his leather blacksmithing apron. She finished the trimming and released the leg, letting the horse place it back down on the ground. She wiped her forehead with the back of her arm, and only succeeded in smearing more dust around her forehead and nose.
