Rin had always been a mystery to me. She was a rather guarded woman, and all that I knew for sure was that she had been a courtesan for many years. I had guessed from her accent that she was born and raised in Rome, and I had assumed that she had never been in a long-term relationship outside of those she had with her patrons. The idea that she may have a child of her own had never crossed my mind, and it was jarring to hear her mention a son with tears in her eyes; there was an entirely different side to Rin that I don’t think many people had ever seen. I had a thousand questions competing in my mind as I looked at her silently. I wanted to know how old her son was, and how long Caius had been keeping him from her. I wanted to know if he was being looked after or if he was being torture
