I must have seemed pitiful to Jax; he didn’t say anything at first, but his body language softened a little, and he appeared less unsure of himself. He must have been suspicious about why he had been called there - he was probably expecting it to be a trick, or something the Emperor had arranged to amuse himself. The reality was that I was scared, and confused, and I felt completely alone. Whether Caius had realized how desperately I needed somebody who could relate to what I was going through when he sent for Jax to talk to me, or if it was just a way for him to figure out whether Jax was a threat to him. really didn’t matter; what mattered was the fact we were together now, and we could talk, and he hadn’t criticized me for anything I had told him even though he really could have done.
