Work Place Bullying

The unexpected day off did something to Neveah’s brain chemistry. She didn’t feel like she was awake and in an odd way felt like she was in a dream reality that felt too good to want to pinch herself to wake up from. Trying but going nowhere, it was odd. After making them a late breakfast, Onix groaned at the soft Japanese style pancakes that were light and fluffy. Making a cinnamon butter topping and a not too sweet icing sugar, she had him full and satisfied minutes later as they drank coffee and smoked a joint. About to protest because they weren’t supposed to, Onix promised it was fine and kissed her mouth sharing the smoke with her. Kissing, the smoke intertwining and making them both buzzed in the head like their coffee and food, it felt just as good as he touched her and kissed her until she giggled and sat in his lap. Liking her in his lap and holding her there, Onix peered up at her and admitted, “I’ve never known happiness to this level. You bring out the genuine joy in me wife.” Neveah knew it wasn’t natural, but she was compelled to be honest with him as she buried her fingers in his dreads and admitted, “I don’t even think this is real I’m so happy. I keep expecting to wake up and you be this dream...maybe I’ve snapped, and I don’t even realize it and I’m in some psych ward babbling like a parrot daydreaming about you. But that’s okay...I think.” Onix smiled at her sadly and shook his head at her amused, “Oh beloved, you haven’t lost your mind. And you’re more than okay. You’re awake. And the feelings we’re have are more real than anything anyone else in this mortal dimension will ever comprehend. Our connection is written in legacies of tongues that have long been forgotten. But it inscribed you to match me, so I will worship my deity as I was made to. As I enjoy doing.” Staring at Onix for a moment Neveah not use to such adoration admitted softly, “I don’t know what you are really. Or what you’re doing to me...but it’s making me happy and I feel I can trust you. And I know you’re not hurting me. So... don’t disappoint me...and I won’t run from you.” Kissing her happily, Onix promised with a ferocious growl, “Deal.” And they were soon making love on his couch with a dangerous need for the other. The day speeding by and yet so slow in his presence, Onix and Neveah both didn’t want the day to end. To return to reality. Because reality sucked and even he was less patient for the outside than usual as he glared at the slow humans moving in front of his car. “Run them over.” He told his driver, a demon on payroll who laughed at his impatience and said casually, “No sir...but you’re wife’s car has just left her home. She’ll beat you there in five minutes.” Happy Neveah was being taken care of, Onix thanked Kellin and sat back thinking of Neveah to grow some patience. If only he knew. As Neveah got to work feeling like a new woman, she was trying to smack the stupid smile off her face. Texting her cousin she had to tell him something, she made plans to see Zyon when she got to her floor and got to her office. Seeing Josphine sitting at her desk with her feet propped up, she raised an eyebrow, “I’m sorry, have you made yourself at home?” Josphine sat up at her tone but fought a smirk, “Sorry darling, I was just...getting use to some things.” Knowing the woman was implying she’d soon have Neveah’s position, Neveah rolled her eyes at her and said, “Right because I took a day off and that’s going to end with me being fired so says your buddy Egbert? Why because he had to work for a change? He’ll get the f**k over it.” Josphine shocked at the mouth Neveah had on her this morning was left floored when the younger black woman told her once, “Get the f**k up from my desk. Did you expect me to sit in your lap?” Getting up quick and feeling embarrassed, Josphine was uneasy by Neveah’s attitude shift. A demur and quiet person, professional and kind of a push over since she got hired so young and had grown up in these halls being pushed around, it was now? She’d changed. And it was about damn time as she waved Josphine out of her way impatient when she tried to walk around the desk all slow and approach all mysterious. Rushed out of the way and left awkward as her power moves were scoffed at, Neveah’s words? Were a warning. “Listen Josephine I know you don’t like working under me because I’m younger, but the thing is I didn’t cheat out of this job. I passed a course and when the job was available I took it because it was a good opportunity. Now you can be angry about missing out on that opportunity and disappointed. But you’re done disrespecting me just because you couldn’t have it. instead, you should be asking me how to become available for the next promotion at the level you’re at so you can continue to be prepared for if one day this job could be yours. Not trying to plot pointlessly against me.” Josephine started to say she hadn’t but Neveah knew she had and reminded her, “I know you gave me that report with pages missing on purposes. Like how you keep Killian waiting for other things with my signature so it’ll look like I’m behind, and you keep telling the newbie wrong so she’ll have more questions for me. You’re the one who’s slowing the machine down. And it ends. Now...or you can be fired. Which one is it?” Silenced and embarrassed, Neveah nodded at her expression and dismissed her with the simple, “Then we shouldn’t have further problems I supposed. Good day.” Sent away feeling like she’d been slapped, Josphine was soon in the bathroom crying. While Egbert having been being nosey? Listened in and tried to go in like a hard ass. “Flexing power for someone who just unexpectedly called out? That’s interesting.” Neveah not jumping or caring about his words instead said, “I’ve worked here for nearly nine years and haven’t clocked out a minute early. Me taking one day off finally? Did not break the matrix unless you weren’t doing your job?” Accusation hot and his ears burning at the institution, Egbert quickly sneered, “Are you trying to tell me that I don’t do my job?” Only Neveah raised an eyebrow and said with no aggression, “No but are you trying to tell me taking a sick day after nine years of employment and almost two hundred hours in wellness and not to mention weeks of PTO available that I can’t use it?” Coughing since she had him on that, Egbert who honestly hadn’t cared until Josphine pointed it out, Egbert was now trying to save his ass and say, “Right but you’re supposed to notify us-.” Neveah however interrupted his lies and reminded him, “No I notify the attendance line and put in my time from my time bank. You don’t approve my checks, HR does. Just like they approve my time off request. And wellness? Isn’t preplanned it’s, if I wake up feeling like s**t and can’t come in, I don’t have to. Which is what happened. I did as I was supposed to, so again? Is there a problem?” She waited and Egbert stared her down uncomfortable before saying nothing and running away from her. Not sure who pissed in her oatmeal but sure it was what had her acting like a b***h, Neveah didn’t care about him grumbling about her PMS-ing. Instead she rolled her eyes at his back and got to work.
