The moment Elise closed the door, the smile slid off her face like it had never existed. The lock clicked into place, sharp and final, and something inside her snapped. “Damn it!” she screamed, her voice echoing off the walls as she kicked off her slippers and sent them flying across the living room. One hit the couch. The other slammed into the wall and dropped to the floor. She didn’t care. Her chest was heaving, breaths coming fast and shallow, her hands trembling with fury she had been holding back the entire time Marian stood in her doorway. She grabbed the nearest thing—a framed photo from the console table—and hurled it against the wall. Glass shattered, raining down like sharp, glittering confetti. They left together.
