Chapter : 2. Introduction..

Hi. My name is Melania Varlett. I’m an 18 years old girl living in 19, Hemdale street, California. Currently, I am in first year of college at Carthage University. But I don’t know how long I can keep studying because I am running out of money. The apartment rent I live in is eating up all my salary, even though I share it with my best friend who pays half of it. And on top of it, my collage admission fees took everything I saved in two years. Now you might ask, where are my parents and how I ended up in this situation? Let me tell you my story from the beginning. I had an actual home once, where I lived with my mom and dad. We were really happy there. But when I turned 9, something happened with my parents. Even though they didn't say anything to me, I noticed how they behaved so worried all the time. They were scared of people around us. One day, they packed up all of our stuffs and left our home to go somewhere. But before we can go far, some people started chasing us and hitting our car. My father somehow managed to get out of there, but it scared them a lot. So they decided to leave me in one of their friends’ house with a promise to come back to take me with them. At that moment, my mom handed me a book and told me to open it once I become 18. I was confused and too scared to ask them anything. Even though they promised me to return, their tears and sweet kisses were telling me that it was a final goodbye. Before I can understand anything, they were gone. They were gone out of my life and never returned. Later, the couple they dropped me at told me that my parents died in a car accident. Even the house we were living in got on fire, leaving nothing behind. But I didn't believe them because I knew something bad happens to them and people caused it to them just because they were a little different from others. They killed my parents because they were unique. I was still too young to live on my own. So that couple took me in as they don’t have a child themselves. I also accepted them as a family. But I never forget my real parents. I always tried to open the book and read what they have written on it. I thought it was a diary where they have written their love story. But unfortunately it wasn't opening at all. Like it’s made of a rock or the whole book was glued together. No matter how much I tried, it never opened. And after a while I gave up on it. After two years of my parents’ death, the couple I was living with, got bored with me. I don’t know if I made any mistake or what, that they dropped me off at an orphanage. But I swear I was a good girl with them. I listened to everything they say. I studied well and always came top on my school. But maybe the love of a family wasn't written on my fate at all. So, at the age of 11, I became a member of the orphanage. After 5 years, when I became 16, they threw me out of the orphanage by saying that I was a grownup and I had to start living on my own. Thankfully, I had become best friends with Gloria by then and she took me in. I met Gloria when I was in high-school. She is a year older than me and she took charge of her own life at a very young age. She invited me to live with her in the apartment we are currently living. She also helped me get a job where she works part time on the side of studying. I’m really glad that she was there when I needed someone's help the most. Since then, we live together, study together and work together. Our character might be different from each other as she is more cheerful and clingy. On the other hand, I’m a bit shy and silent. But this difference is what made our bond strong. Even though I stay silent most of the time, but when it comes to a point where the justice needs to stand up, I step forward to fight. Gloria loves this strength of mine and I love her light heartedness the most. We are the best duet ever. As my regular life. I wake up early and cook food for both of us. I learned to cook at a very young age because sometimes I had to make my own food when my second family was busy with their jobs. I used to cook in the orphanage as well to feed my third family. Seeing those little kids enjoy my food, I felt happy. Since then, I grew in love with cooking. After having breakfast, we get ready for college, where we both recently got admission. Exactly at 10 am, Brandon comes to pick us up in his car. Brandon is Gloria's boyfriend who reads in our collage as well. They are in a relationship with each other for a year. He is a really nice guy and I am very happy for both of them. After the entire day of studying, we go to the five-star restaurant where we work from 5 pm to 12 pm as a waitress. It drains all of our energy we had saved after the entire day, but it is the only source of income with which we pay our rent, food and study expenses with. The salary was not enough for everything but we had to manage. Sometimes Brandon helps us with our rent, but it makes me feel bad. So, I want to do something bigger so that I can carry my own expenses without depending on anyone. I don’t know when that day will come, when I will stand up on my own feet. Today is my 18th birthday. I finally became an adult and now I can try to have a real job. I woke up early on the morning with the nightmare of my parents’ death like always. Tears are flowing out of my eyes when I opened them. So it's been 9 years since they left me with the promise of coming back. Getting up from the bed, I went to my cupboard. Pulling out the box, I keep all my important memories in, I took the book out of it. It’s the only thing I have left of my parents. “Where are you mom, dad? I’m still waiting for you.” I caressed my palm on it to remember their faces. But all of a sudden I felt a wave or some electricity pass under my arm. I dropped the book out of my hand and it fell on the floor, parted from the middle. I got shocked to see the book laying on the floor with its pages wide open. I rubbed my eyes to check if it's my dream or not. I have tried all possible ways to open it. Even Gloria and Brandon have tried to open it for me. But nobody managed to open it. Then how come it is open now. I picked it up from the floor with shaky hands. Maybe this is it. Maybe I will find my answers in it. Maybe they have written in it about what happened to them or where thy might have gone. I should definitely find something in here. With this excitement, I opened the book. But I was a bit overtaken when I found some kind of spells written on it instead of words. With wonder, I opened the first page of the book. Surprisingly, there was nothing written about my parents there except of some fantasy stories. What is going on? Why did my parents give me a story book at that moment? What bullshit? I was disappointed to find that my parents had thought that I will be taken away by a Fantasy story and forget about them. But they didn't know how hard my life would become without them. How much I will miss them with every step in my life. In a sad mood, I put the book back in the box and inside the cabinet. I don’t need a story book to make me dream a false life when I have to face the harsh reality of the world on my own. Finally, taking a deep breath, I went out of the room to prepare breakfast for us. After that, we have to get ready for college as well. My feet feel heavy and my will to do anything is gone. But still I dragged myself to the kitchen to find Gloria in there, making a mess all around. “What are you doing in my kitchen?” I screamed at her and quickly turned off the oven on which a pan was burning something in it. “First of all, it's our kitchen. And secondly, I am trying to make breakfast.” She replied in her sassy tone. “I know I got a bit late. But that dosen’t mean I want you to make breakfast today.” I felt a bit guilty about causing her this trouble. “I wanted to do something special for you. I thought about making some pancakes for you and surprise you on your birthday.” The heaviness of my mood ran away, and I became happy to see that at least there is someone to think about me in this world. “Thank you so much for coming in my life. You are the best established friend anyone can ever have. You are the best Gloria.” I jumped on her and hugged her tight in joy. “I know I am the best. Now get away from me before you get covered in batter as well and help me learn how to make this. I have to learn it for my kids too.” With a smile on my face, I taught her how to make beautiful pancakes. The glowing face of her with each successful pancake gave me the happiness I want in my life. After we were done destroying the kitchen, we both ate what we made a full stomach. So full that we can’t move anymore. After that, I sent her to get ready in our common bathroom, while I cleaned the kitchen. Once I was done with my work, I went to get ready myself. Today is a special day for me. So, I wore a beautiful red top with ripped jeans. Letting my shoulder length black hair with brown highlights, I did a light makeup on my face. After shining my eyes with mascara and eyeliner and my lips with a nude lipstick, I went out for collage. “Gloria? Are you done?” I knocked on her door to check if she was done or not. “Yeah. Almost.” Once I got her reply, I went in to see how far she was. “What do you mean, almost? We are getting late.” “Two minutes sweet heart.” “I can't believe you are still doing make up. Do you have to dress up every day? Brandon will love you no matter how you look.” I teased her a little for her every day dressing up. “You will understand my point the day you will fall in love. Now shut up and let me finish.” Just as she finished her makeup, a ping on her phone informed us that Brandon is here to pick us up and texting Gloria to call her down. The blush on her face to see his message makes me wonder how love truly affects people. Then we both grabbed our bags and went out to where Brandon was waiting for us.
