I didn’t stand up right after Detective Roth turned off the voice recorder, just to make sure it didn’t look like I was in too much haste to get away from him. In all reality, as his bright blue eyes stared right through me, all I wanted to do was run. He looked at me in such a way that I thought he’d grab my collar and throw me against the wall just so he could crack my skull open and read the secrets hidden away in my grey brain matter. He tucked the pad and pencil and the voice recorder back into the inside pockets of his coat, and I thought about how pointless it was to write down what I had said when it was already recorded.
