My head still throbbed from earlier—the committee meeting, Coach Donovan’s voice pulling me out of trouble like a man yanking someone from the edge of a cliff. But none of that mattered as much as the hollow, gnawing worry I felt the moment June’s voice came through the phone. “She’s sick,” she’d said, with that teasing edge that made it sound lighter than it was.
