CHAPTER 9- Year 2012

Nancy shivered at the thought of dying under my hands. She stared at me, challenging me to withdraw my words, but it didn’t happen. She didn’t get her way and she should know how to back down. “You’re crazy!” She accused me of losing my marbles but I could only shrug off my shoulders in response to her accusation. “You need to prove it, Nancy.” I challenged her to find proof of her claims and for every second that passed between us, she became more agitated. “I will ask the Principal to kick you out of this school!” It wasn’t the first time that Nancy threatened a student to be kicked out but it was my first time receiving her nasty temper. It’s just a shame that she messed up with the wrong person. I was quiet but she disturbed my peace with Dave’s help. “Your grandmother can’t kick me out without a valid reason and you know that,” I reminded her. “Watch out!” Nancy issued a threat that she would be true to her words, and I should be scared? Should I scared? Never! I, Cassandra Anderson, was ready to face the world! Our school has cleaners so the students weren’t required to clean after classes. Supposedly, my father would wait for me outside the gate or his designated driver would be the one waiting. I was only a few steps away from the main gate when I saw a man who resembled him. He wore the same clothes on the night when he died. Just like the other time I saw him, I looked away. “Cassandra!” I smiled at the brown-eyed woman who looked presentable in her navy suit. Her hair was also brown after she dyed it, and there’s no hint of sadness on her strong and friendly. Even from a distance, she watched me enthusiastically. My mother, Adrianna Anderson, came from a wealthy family but after she married my father, she chose to stay low-key and focused on being a housewife. However, her dedication became futile when Daddy had several affairs and the worst was with someone named Rachel. To be honest, I wasn’t sad at all when he died. When he’s gone, Mommy could live her life again; the life she deserved from the beginning. “You’re early, Mom!”   “Because I missed you so much! I can’t concentrate in the office while thinking about you,” she replied. I was aware that she considered me as her prized or only possession but it wasn’t an issue to me. I would gladly do everything to make her happy! “Can we get some fried chicken, please?” I’ve been craving for a spicy fried chicken and there’s a chicken store near our residence. It was owned by a Korean national and their chicken were the best! “Sure darling,” she agreed. “You didn’t like to have chicken in the past,” she noticed but I just smiled in response. “Well, I like it now and there’s no explanation,” I told her. When she became silent behind the wheel, I hoped that he was satisfied with my response because I didn’t want to divulge further.   We stopped at Yummy’s Chicken and I felt nostalgic when I opened the window. It was my mother who went to the counter to order my request while I just waited inside the car.  Then, I saw him again. He smiled at me but just like what I did when I saw him earlier, I looked away. “Do you want anything else?” She asked after giving me a box of fried chicken. “Ice cream,” I replied while munching on a piece of chicken. Well, I couldn’t wait anymore and the aroma of the food continued to bother my senses. “You’re gross!” She exclaimed, and I immediately returned the drumstick inside the box. I grabbed a tissue and wiped my mouth then I washed my hands with alcohol. I apologized for being stubborn. She hated to see me eating inside the car. There’s something about my mother and I was enthralled into her. Perhaps it was her stubborn nature and arrogance. “How’s the club?” I referred to the club where the members were required to be mistress. My mom wanted to create something out of ordinary. She told me that my father was just one of the philandering husbands in society. She wanted to train women of all ages who’s a mistress or the other woman of a married man. For me, her idea was unique but it wasn’t necessary! “We got ten members now,” she replied smilingly while making a U-turn towards our residence.   “Well, that’s good to hear, Mom! You’ll be busy for sure.” “Yeah darling but don’t worry because I will still have enough time with you,” she clarified. When we got home, I noticed that the biggest house in our subdivision seemed to have people in it. The lights were on and I saw a shadow. “Why do you care so much about the homewreckers?” “The reason why I set up the club was to train those women not to be a nuisance to the legal wife. I cared about the wife and not the mistresses. “It’s a secret between us,” She reminded me and I flinched on my seat.
