Throughout the night, I struggled to sleep but I just couldn’t do it. My mind kept wandering back to my siblings and how I would protect them.
Ruiz wasn’t going to give up without a fight. He would do everything in his power to find and punish me. I needed to be smart and fast.
When the sun came up, I turned to Bonnie who was sleeping peacefully. “Bonnie, wake up! Wake up!” I tapped her gently.
Bonnie groaned and pushed my hand away. “Can I sleep for five more minutes?” She pleaded in a slightly groggy voice.
There was no time to waste. We needed to the fast if we wanted to leave the country without Ruiz finding us. “No, Bonnie, you’ll sleep on the plane.”
