The rain only got heavier. Outside, lightning flashed, heralding the thunder that followed soon after. Idly, I started counting. One Mississippi, two Mississippi, three… Crash! The clap of thunder rang out, echoing through the cave, and I sighed. Since light moved faster than sound, counting the seconds between the strike of lightning and the clap of thunder allowed one to find out how far away the storm was. If I had reached five Mississippi, then the storm would have been a mile away. As it was, the rain showed no signs of letting up. We were truly right in the middle of a thunderstorm.
