“Breakfast time,” Rosie exclaimed, shaking Yvonne, Elsa, and I awake. She, Claire, and Euphie had taken the second shift, and had prepared breakfast by the time we awoke. Sunlight was streaming through the mouth of the cave, dispelling the shadows that the night had cast. I was feeling more cheerful, too. The day felt a lot less intimidating than the night, even though Hans’s threat and Felicia’s possible spying still hung over our heads. The smell wafting from the fire made my stomach rumble, clearing away the last of my worries, too. “Let’s eat!” I exclaimed, making my way over after taking a quick swig of water to rinse my mouth out.
