I groaned. Why on earth was Euphie waking me up in the middle of the night? My eyelids felt as though they weighed a ton, and I had to slap myself in the face lightly in order to feel a little more awake. I stood up with an effort, knowing that sitting down would only tempt me back into sleep. "What is it?" I asked, trying to keep the annoyance out of my voice. "Nicholas is gone," Euphie said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. Sleep-addled as I was, it took a few moments for me to parse what she had said.
