REBECCA The strategy that Maddox and I—but, knowing them, probably all the other members of the group as well—adopted was to divide the triangle of forest we had been told to patrol into two large halves, to cover more ground in less time. I, partly for selfish reasons, took the half where the river flowed, so that I could have access to water if I got thirsty or too hot. With my heat hormones in overdrive during those days, I found myself suffering from terrible hot flashes far too often. It was really difficult to focus on the task at hand on such a beautiful day: it was the height of summer, golden light filtered through the leaves, the temperature was wonderful, and the sounds of the forest around me were pure music. It was a great pity that I was there for training and not to enjoy
