Alex’s words kept going on in my mind like a broken record: for an endless moment, I was unable to do anything – just stand there, in the middle of the locker room, all too aware of my teammates’ (well, ex-teammates) eyes on me. They were all looking at me with shock, sadness and sorrow, and some with pity, even: of course they did. I must have been a rather pitiful sight, standing there after being told I was no longer their captain – after walking into that room unaware of everything.
