Chapter 5: Dinner with Dad

Our shift ended, and we went down and everyone went on ahead to their homes while I wait for my dad since we're gonna have dinner together at his place. I texted him saying that “I'll be waiting outside the building." While I was waiting for my dad to pick me up, I was listening to some music while scrolling through the internet. I received a text from Oliver and we started texting.

Oliver: Freddie, are you ready to know what the good news is?

Freddie: Of course, I'm ready. I couldn't wait for you to say it since you told me you have good news for me.

Oliver: As you know, I'll be coming back next week. Well since we finished early, I'll be leaving the place tomorrow probably after lunchtime and be back by the evening.

Freddie: That is good news. I can't wait for you to come back. Want to spend time together at your place the next day you arrived?

Oliver: I would love that, I missed you so much after all this time. I couldn't stop thinking about you.

Freddie: I guess we're on the same page and probably mine's worse. Missing you makes me look at my laptop while working. I'm just glad that Stephanie has my back every time I did that or else what would have happened to us when Emil finds out.

Oliver: I can't even imagine if that happens.

Freddie: Oliver I'll text you later. My dad's here to pick me up and we will have dinner together at his place.

Oliver: Have fun at your dad's. Don't do anything crazy that will make me jealous.

Freddie: I won't sillyhead. Love you.

Oliver: I love you too.

We stopped texting and I went inside dad's car the minute he arrives. He said he was sorry for making me wait since their virtual meeting had some problems on the way and couldn't finish on time. I said that it was fine since Oliver and I texted.

On the way to his place, I told him to not forget that we're gonna pick up a few drinks for ourselves. We stopped by at a minimart to buy a few drinks and told dad that I'm gonna do the buying since there is no parking and he has to stay in the car. I asked what drink I'll be getting for him since I wanted something else to drink and to my surprise, we both like to drink flavored gin.

I went inside the minimart, got one bottle of grape-flavored gin and one bottle of peach-flavored gin and both bottles were 500ml. I paid for the bottles and went inside dad's car.

Minutes later, we arrived at dad's place. Dad said that he was living in a condo that he owns, and the rent wasn't a problem. He lives on the top floor of the building which I believed where the biggest of all units in the condo are. I couldn't wait for our dinner together and I couldn't wait to see where he lives.

As we went inside the elevator, he said that he has a surprise for me. I wondered what the surprise could be. I'm just hoping that his surprise for me is not for me to live with him in his condo since I did tell him that Oliver and I are planning to live together after I graduate.

We reached the top floor and saw that in the lobby two doors are meaning there are two units on the top floor. Dad told me the other unit was just sold today as we went inside his unit. I was so amazed when I get see his place, I was left with my mouth open to see how big his unit is. It's also fully furnished. He gave me a tour and my expectation was beyond the roof. It's bigger than I expected it to be. He has a fireplace in the living area, couches were so comfortable and there's a coffee table at the center which is made of glass. The dining area and kitchen are merged into one area and it's beyond perfect. He also has a minibar in that area. Then we went to his room and was shocked to see that his closet is a walking closet and the bed looked so comfy.

Dad then tells me that he will put the gins in his refrigerator to keep it cold. He then tells me that I can use his bathroom to freshen up while he's gonna cook dinner. Beside his bed was a nightstand and I noticed that there was a picture frame there. I picked the frame up to see the picture better. To my surprise, it was a photo of me and dad when I was a baby. Dad looked so happy in the picture when he was carrying me in his arms. I kind of went into tears to see the photo. Seeing the photo is like solid proof that he loves me. I put the photo back and went to the bathroom to freshen up.

After freshening up, dad calls me that dinner is ready. We sat down at the dinner table and started to eat while chatting.

Dad: How was work today?

Freddie: Hellish. We were dumped with so much work and it was exhausting.

Dad: Welcome to work life.

Freddie: But I'm glad we lessen the work today, and we can relax a bit the next few days before the deadline. You should've seen me working. It's like I've been working my whole life without taking breaks.

Dad: *laughs* I think I'd already imagined.

Freddie: *also laughs* One question, how did you learn how to cook? The food is so delicious.

Dad: I guess the same way you do. A lot of research and practice.

Freddie: I almost forgot, you told me you have a surprise for me. What is it?

Dad: Let me give a hint. Remember what I said earlier that the unit across me was just sold.

Freddie: Wait, that unit is mine?

Dad: All yours. Since you told me earlier that you and Oliver are gonna live together, I decided to buy that unit for you. You can start living there anytime you want. Just tell me and I will give you the key.

Freddie: Is it as big as your unit? How about furniture?

Dad: Yes and no need to worry about furniture. It's fully furnished when I bought it.

Freddie: I'm so happy. Oliver would be surprised if I tell him this. Thanks, dad.

I went to dad's seat and hugged him. He is the best dad I could ever have. After years of being separated and nothing but full of texting and calls, he knows how to recover everything back. It's like we've been closer than ever.

Freddie: Let's take a selfie together for something to look back.

Dad: Sure son. Don't forget to send it to my phone as well.

We took a picture together on my phone and continued with dinner. After eating dinner, I helped dad with cleaning up the table and washing the dishes. And while doing that we were still chatting and laughing as dad tells a funny story. As we finished with the cleaning, we sat down in his living area. Dad then starts up a fire at his fireplace, took the two bottles of flavored gin and two glasses from his minibar. As we put some flavored gin in our glasses, dad started the conversation.

Dad: I haven't asked you this but, how are the two of you doing in the relationship?

Freddie: Everything is fine between us ever since we broke up.

Dad: You two already broke up?! Well, I'm amazed that you two recovered.

Freddie: Well, it wasn't easy. Let me continue my story from this morning.
