The one part of the plan Erik hadn’t worked through was what would happen if they jumped into the Zitark system and couldn’t find the Core fleet. UTC space was filled with ships, sensor satellites, and other such tools that helped map the position of objects and ships all over, especially in core systems. Even then, it was easy for ships, especially on the frontier, to slip past the gauntlet and hide if they were dedicated and careful. If Julia Caldo hadn’t been in the Solar System, she might have managed to escape.
When Erik’s jump sickness cleared and the long-range sensors revealed nine ships only a couple of hours away hard-burning toward two other ships coming from a different direction, he sent up a silent prayer to the Lady.
