THE TRUTH THAT CUTS
The moment the PI asked that question, the room went completely still.
“Did you guys know who Marco was?”
Confusion crossed the room in an instant as we all stared at the PI like he had suddenly grown two heads. The question made me question all the things I've ever known about him. If they were true or just made up.
I glanced instinctively at Santiago, then Matteo, then Sienna, but no one answered immediately. Of course there was going to be no response. It was a ridiculous question.
“What kind of question is that?” Santiago finally asked, his voice calm but edged with sarcasm
The PI sitting across from us didn't even flinch. He looked…. Tired. The kind of tiredness someone who had seen too much and learned to keep his emotions packed away
