Elena’s POV
I could never have imagined the last five years of my life. My existence felt like hell during this time. I married Rick Stevens against my father’s wishes because I loved him. However, he never loved me in return. On our wedding night, he slept with my stepsister, Anna, who introduced me to Rick. I signed over my share of my mother's company to Rick the night of our engagement. Little did I know, it was all planned. I was naive and believed Rick came from a wealthy family. He told me his family hailed from Europe and possessed much old money. I should have realised this was not true, as he could not speak a single European language, but I was blinded by love. Rick is poor, and so is his family.
Contrary to the belief that stepmothers and stepdaughters don’t get along, I always got along with my stepmother, Christine White. She is unhappy with her daughter and what she is doing to me. My stepmother, like my father, never wanted me to marry Rick. She hated him from the beginning. She knew that he was only after my money and warned me about it. My father is also well off, and I do not mind if he gives his money to my stepsister one day. However, my stepmother wanted to hear nothing about it. She made my father change his will and made me his only heir as I ran the family business. I was successful. I never gave Rick my family business. He has already bankrupted my mother's business, so I will not trust him with my family's business.
My father warned me time and again against Rick and his family. I didn’t want to listen. I married him. For five years, he had an affair with my stepsister. He was not even shy about it. He did not keep his affair a secret. Well, at least not in front of me. For others, he hides his affair with Anna. Night after night, I lay crying in my bed. I knew Rick was with my sister while I was sleeping alone. However, I kept a happy front. I inherited all my mother’s money and her business, which I gave to Rick to run the day she died. On my wedding day, I made a testament saying Rick will inherit everything I own the day I die. Little did I know that Rick and Anna, my stepsister, were after my money. For five years, I prayed Rick would love me as I loved him and would see that my sister was not meant for him. Then, I lost hope and filed for divorce. As soon as we get the divorce, my testament will be changed, and everything that I own will go to my father. It was the biggest mistake of my life. I hear Rick coming home. He looks furious as he walks into my room.
“You want a divorce? Five years wasted on a b***h like you! Do you think I will walk out of this marriage empty-handed? You put me through hell. I was not able to be with the woman I truly loved. You always thought you were better than me! You thought because you were wealthy, you could look down on me! Well, I am not going to allow it!” Rick screams.
“Calm down. You can be with Anna now. I will give you a million dollars if you agree to this divorce without fighting it. I am tired of you, Rick. I’m tired of you sleeping with my sister. You don’t care about me. You never have and never will. You and Anna can move wherever you want. A million dollars should be enough for you to start a new business,” I say.
“You are worth billions. Why would I be satisfied with one million? Why should I take your offer if I can have everything? If you die, I get everything. You didn’t want me to run your family business because you thought I was too stupid to run a business, all because your stupid business went bankrupt! If you die, I will become the CEO of White Enterprises. You did not even take my surname. You have always thought you were better than everybody else, even your sister. I won’t let you walk away from me and get a divorce. I would much rather mourn your death than divorce you,” Rick says. His eyes and his face are full of evil. Rick starts walking towards me. He looks like a man on a mission.
“My mother's business was successful until you took it over! I was running it, and it made a lot of money! What are you doing?” I ask. Rick keeps walking closer to me. I can feel the fear in my heart.
“It is time for you to commit suicide, darling,” Rick says, walking towards me. I walk backwards. Our bedroom is on the second floor. I do not even know why I call it our bedroom because I am the only one sleeping here.
“Rick, are you crazy? Do you think you are going to get away with this? You know, if you get caught for murder, you are throwing away your whole life,” I say. I am nervous, but I will not show it to Rick.
“Here is nobody at home, honey. I gave all the servants tonight off. The security system has been turned off. You were all alone at home when I got home and discovered your body on the terrace. You see, you jumped off the balcony of the second story of our house. I can already see the headlines in the newspaper. “Billionaire jumps to her death because her husband wanted a divorce.” Anna is pregnant with my baby. I will not wait a week before I marry her. I will admit that I had an affair, but I never thought that you were so in love with me that you would commit suicide. I will tell everybody who wants to listen that our marriage was over for a long time because I fell in love with your sister. I was willing to give you a divorce and was not even going to ask you for a dime because I knew I was in the wrong, but I couldn’t help how my heart felt. People are a sucker for a true love story. They will believe I was in love with your sister and couldn’t help it. Anna and I are genuinely in love. Do you know how long it took me to practice your handwriting to write the suicide note? I am glad to inform you that I have perfected your handwriting. It is time for you to die,” Rick says. I have retreated to the back of the balcony. I quickly turn around to look down. Then I feel him push me. I yell as I feel myself falling. My life flashes before my eyes as it feels like I am falling forever. I wasted my life on a man who does not deserve me. I hit the ground, and for one second, I felt immense pain, but then everything went black.
