No sooner did the words escape her lips did an ear-piercing scream from outside have them both dropping their cocoa and running out of the shack with everyone filtering out behind them. In the frigid air, her eyes swept around, and she noted Nick poking his head up from behind the sleigh in alarm. “Daddy!” Honey’s voice called loudly from the darkness behind the shack and on the lake. “What the hell is she doing out there?” Grier gasped as she stared unseeingly into the black abyss behind the shack. “Mr. Kash, Mr. Kash, Honey said she saw Mr. Nick walking onto the lake, and she went to follow him but he’s over there. She was sure she saw him, and she went after him.” Nick pulled a flashlight from a toolbox in the sled and swung it across the lake trying to catch sight of the preteen.
