CHAPTER FIVE: THE TRIAL

853 Words
By sunrise, the entire pack knew. Lyra stood in the center of the Silver Ridge council hall, the same place where victories were celebrated and important decisions were made for the pack. Today, however, the large circular chamber felt more like a courtroom. Or an execution ground. The stone floor beneath her feet felt cold. Around the hall, wolves filled every space—standing along the walls, sitting on the wooden benches, whispering quietly among themselves. Their eyes never left her. Judging. Suspicious. Disappointed. At the front of the chamber, the five pack elders sat behind a long wooden table carved with ancient pack symbols. Their expressions were grave. This was not a normal meeting. This was a trial. Lyra’s chest tightened. Across from her stood Adrian. Calm. Confident. Prepared. Selene stood beside him like a silent shadow. Adrian looked nothing like the man Lyra had loved for five years. There was no warmth in his eyes now—only cold determination. One of the elders, Elder Bran, struck the wooden staff against the floor. The sound echoed through the chamber. “The council will now hear the accusations against Lyra Vale,” he announced. Whispers rippled through the crowd. Lyra swallowed hard but forced herself to stand tall. “I am innocent,” she said firmly. Her voice carried through the hall. But the reaction from the crowd was cold. Elder Bran nodded slowly. “That is what we will determine today.” His gaze shifted toward Adrian. “You may present your evidence.” Adrian stepped forward without hesitation. “Thank you, Elder.” His voice was steady. Controlled. Lyra noticed something then. He wasn’t nervous. He wasn’t angry. He looked prepared. Like someone who had rehearsed this moment. A strange chill crawled down her spine. Adrian turned slightly toward the crowd. “For months,” he began, “I have suspected Lyra of meeting another Alpha beyond our borders.” Gasps echoed through the hall. Lyra shook her head immediately. “That’s a lie.” Adrian ignored her. “Last night, we finally confirmed those suspicions.” Selene stepped forward, holding the silver necklace. Lyra’s necklace. “This was found,” Selene said clearly, “just past the eastern border… near the territory of the Ironclaw pack.” The murmurs in the hall grew louder. Lyra’s stomach twisted. The Ironclaw pack was one of Silver Ridge’s biggest rivals. Being caught near their land was serious. But leaving personal belongings there? That looked like secret meetings. “This proves nothing,” Lyra said quickly. Adrian’s lips curved slightly. “Perhaps not by itself.” He turned toward the crowd. “Bring him in.” Lyra’s heart skipped. Two warriors escorted a young hunter into the center of the room. Lyra recognized him. Taren. A newer member of the pack. He avoided her eyes completely. Adrian placed a hand on the hunter’s shoulder. “Tell the council what you saw.” Taren cleared his throat nervously. “I… I was patrolling near the eastern border two nights ago.” Lyra stared at him. He continued. “I saw Lyra crossing into Ironclaw territory.” Gasps erupted throughout the hall. “That’s not true!” Lyra said immediately. But Taren kept speaking. “She wasn’t alone.” The whispers intensified. Adrian watched quietly as the room filled with tension. Taren swallowed. “There was another wolf waiting for her.” Lyra felt her pulse racing. “I never left the territory that night!” Elder Bran frowned. “Do you deny being near the eastern border?” “I patrol there often,” Lyra replied. “But I never crossed it.” Adrian nodded slowly, like he had expected that answer. “That’s interesting.” Lyra narrowed her eyes. “Why?” Adrian turned toward the elders. “We also discovered something else.” He gestured toward another warrior. The warrior stepped forward holding a small cloth bag. Inside was a handful of dirt and broken leaves. Lyra frowned. “What is that supposed to prove?” The warrior spoke carefully. “Our trackers found Lyra’s scent trail leading directly toward Ironclaw territory.” The room erupted again. Lyra’s breath caught. “My scent?” The warrior nodded. “Clear as day.” Lyra’s mind raced. That was impossible. Unless— Her stomach dropped. Unless someone had planted it. Her gaze slowly moved toward Selene. Selene was watching her. And smiling. A cold realization settled into Lyra’s chest. The necklace. The scent trail. The witness. Every piece of evidence lined up too perfectly. Too neatly. This wasn’t an accident. This wasn’t suspicion. This was a trap. Lyra looked back at Adrian. And for the first time since the trial began… She truly saw the man standing in front of her. Not her mate. Not the man she loved. But someone capable of destroying her without hesitation. Someone who had planned every step of this. Adrian met her gaze. And in his eyes, Lyra saw the truth. This trial had never been about justice. It had only ever been about getting rid of her.
