Chapter 6

865 Words
Damien’s POV: “Sera!” I caught her before she hit the floor. Her body went completely soft and heavy in my arms. No sound. No warning. Just sudden weakness. Her head fell on my chest. Her skin felt hot and wet. Fear shot through me like a bullet. Not again, not tonight, not her. I lifted her easily and put her back on the bed. I was afraid to even shake her gently. “Sera,” I whispered, moving her hair back. “Open your eyes.” There was no response. Her chest moved, but her breaths were small and uneven. Panic rose in me, but I kept my voice steady. “Luca!” I shouted. “Get the doctor. Now.” Luca rushed in, his eyes wide when he saw her. “What happened?” he asked. “She passed out again,” I snapped. “Where is the doctor?” “Coming fast.” “Make him faster.” Luca ran out immediately. I touched Sera’s cheek. Her skin was too hot. It scared me. Her eyelids moved once, but she didn’t wake up.This wasn’t right. Fainting before was just shock. But this time? This sudden collapse felt wrong. Too wrong. Someone did something to her. “Come on,” I whispered. “Just wake up. Look at me.” Still nothing. My chest hurt. I spent twelve years looking for her, keeping her safe from far away, tearing my world apart to find her… and now she was getting hurt under my protection, and I couldn’t help her. I felt very angry with myself. The doctor came in, followed by Luca. “Has she been like this long?” the doctor asked, moving to the bed. “Five minutes,” I said. “She won’t wake up.” He checked her wrist. His face changed. “Her pulse is not steady.” Not steady? What did that mean? “Tell me,” I demanded, moving closer. “Could be dehydration from fear. Or, someone might have given her a small drug earlier. Something that hit her slowly.” A cold knife cut through me. “Drugged?” I asked, my voice quiet and dangerous. “Drugged with what?” “I have to test her blood,” the doctor said. “But she is weak. Too weak, even for this much stress.” My hands became tight fists. Who could have touched her? Who could get to her? Her aunt's people? Someone in my house? One of the staff? Someone dared to hurt my wife, right here, under my roof. “Can she hear us?” I asked. “Maybe,” the doctor answered. “But she can’t talk or move.” Her head moved a little on the pillow. I leaned in fast. “Sera,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “You are safe. I am right here.” Her fingers twitched… just a little, but it was real. My chest pulled painfully tight. The doctor finished checking her. His face looked worse and worse. “What is it?” I asked, sharp and fast. “She is showing signs of high stress and mild poison,” he said quietly. “Not enough to kill her… but enough to keep her body weak.” The room went silent. Luca cursed under his breath. I just froze. Someone tried to make her weak. Someone wanted her to collapse. Someone wanted to make her easy to move or easy to murder. Not outside, not during the fight, but here. Inside my house, inside my walls. With my guards around her. My blood boiled at the thought of it. “Find out what it was,” I said. The doctor nodded. “I will test it right now.” He finished and looked at me. “She needs rest. Deep rest. No stress. Keep her safe, Damien.” “I will,” I replied, my voice low and certain. The doctor left. Luca stood by the door, watching me. “Boss,” he said, “someone got past our security. They are inside.” “I know.” “We will find them.” “No.” I looked at Sera, then back at him. “I will find them.” He nodded and left quietly. The room was silent again. I sat on the edge of the bed and watched her breathe… small, shaky, but okay. I rubbed her hand gently with my thumb. You are not going anywhere,” I whispered. “Not again. Not ever.” She didn’t move. I leaned down and let my forehead touch the back of her hand…the smallest touch, the only one I would allow myself. “Whoever did this,” I murmured, “is going to regret they ever took a breath.” Her breathing seemed to get slightly deeper, like she heard me. I stayed there for a long time. Watching her, guarding her, waiting for her to wake up. Until she does… I won’t sleep. I won’t blink. I won’t stop. Someone tried to take her from me tonight. I will burn down my whole world before I let them try again.
