Alessia: Hope had finally surrendered to sleep. It took two lullabies, pacing the length of the room, and whispering promises I wasn’t sure I could keep, but eventually her tiny fingers loosened around mine. Seven weeks old, and she already refused to give in easily. I smiled faintly as I laid her in the cradle. “Stubborn,” I whispered. “Just like him. But I love the two of you for it.” I was adjusting her blanket when I felt it. Well, when I felt him… I turned slightly. He was standing near the door, watching us. Not speaking. Not moving. He walked toward me and wrapped his arms around me, pulling me into his embrace, hugging me tightly. He didn’t say a word, and I could tell that something was bothering him despite him not wanting to show it. “What happened?” I asked quietly.
