I didn’t send another messenger, I went myself, because this had gone too far… and because whatever Lucien thought he was doing, whatever game he believed he was controlling, it was slipping, and I wasn’t about to let it spiral into something I couldn’t rein back.
Not when there was still a way to end this clean. Not when I knew that I would be able to try and bargain this way into a better option without more blood, my men’s blood, being spilled.
The forest was quiet as I crossed into Alexander’s territory. There were no patrols visible. No movement. But I felt them watching. At least he hadn’t grown careless, and to say the least, he wasn’t attacking on impulse when I knew that he was angry.
